Job description: The Programs in Special Education in the Department of Education Specialties at St. John’s University is seeking applications for an Assistant tenure track position in Special Education. Responsibilities include teaching graduate level courses in PK-12 Special Education at our Queens campus and online. The position requires the candidate to actively participate in student advisement, maintain an active research agenda, including seeking external grant funding, and contribute to Departmental interdisciplinary activities and initiatives. Engagement in academic service learning and field-supervision of graduate students at practicum sites across the NYC boroughs and Long Island will be required.
School of Education: Established in 1908, the St. John’s University School of Education was the second school in New York State to award graduate degrees to teachers. The School of Education fosters close relationships with public, private, and parochial schools across the New York region and is greatly respected nationally and globally for preparing highly qualified teachers for success in today’s multicultural, inclusive learning environments. The Department of Education Specialties offers graduate programs in Special Education, Literacy and TESOL. The programs in Special Education are differentiated by age – early childhood, childhood, adolescence - and cover a range of career change and Master’s programs, advanced certificates, and online offerings.
Qualifications:
The position requires:
- An earned Doctorate in Special Education or related field (before start date)
- A minimum 3 years of full-time teaching experience in areas of PK-12 Special Education for students with disabilities in schools and or community/clinical settings
- Candidate must demonstrate strong potential for scholarly activity and research publications
- Expertise/experience in building effective school partnerships/teaching residencies in high needs, urban special education settings with students and families from a range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds is valued
- A strong commitment to anti-racism pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching practices is essential
Preferred qualifications:
- Prior higher education teaching experience and research in autism spectrum disorders and/or effective practices in special education assessment and literacy for students with disabilities
- Knowledge of innovative online pedagogies

Starting Date for Position – Spring 2025
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $72,500 - $78,000. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
