Specific Job Title: Senior Accountant 

Reports to: Associate Controller 

Campus:Queens 

 

Job Summary:  

Reporting to the Associate Controller, the Senior Accountant is responsible for the reconciliation and analysis of the University’s plant assets, long-term debt, student loan fund, performance of various reconciliations and account analysis, and financial reporting.   

  

Essential Functions: 

  • Reconciliation and analysis of the University’s plant assets and related depreciation calculations including variance analysis and budget projections. 

  • Reconciliation and analysis of the University’s long-term debt including maintaining related amortization schedules, preparation of debt service payment requests and related journal entries.  

  • Preparation of current and future years' debt service projections.  Reconciliation of debt service actuals to projections to ensure all transactions have been properly recorded and accounted for. 

  • Reconciliation and analysis of funds held by trustee accounts and preparation of related journal entries. 

  • Preparation of bond reimbursement/drawdown requests, including reconciliation to the general ledger to ensure all reimbursable expenses have been accounted for. 

  • Reconciliation and analysis of the University’s student loan fund accounts, including coordinating with the third-party servicer and Student Financial Services to ensure that the activities are recorded timely and accurately. 

  • Preparation of monthly FISAP analysis and calculation of monthly cash balances for the various loan fundsReview annual FISAP report and coordinate with Student Financial Services to document and support the amounts reported. 

  • Performance of monthly reconciliations and account analyses (including, but not limited to health insurance, student refunds, various asset and liability accounts) and related follow up and resolution of reconciling items with various departments. 

  • Provide assistance with fiscal year-end audit and financial statements by preparation of supporting audit schedules and completion of footnote disclosures.  

  • Serve as back-up for credit card functions. 

  • Recruit, train, and supervise student workers. 

  • Assist with documenting and updating accounting policies and procedures. 

  • Recommend and implement procedures to improve the efficiency of assigned areas. 

  • Perform other related duties and special projects as may become necessary. 

 

Competencies: 

  • Detail oriented with the ability to maintain accuracy while working on a variety of tasks. 

  • Must possess analytical skills and be self-motivated.  

  • Have an understanding of accounting principles and the related internal controls. 

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.  

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Access. 

 

Supervisory Responsibility: 

Position supervises student workers who assist with specific tasks.  

 

Work Environment: 

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. 

 

Physical Demands: 

Physical demands would be of a typical office environment with employee required to sit for long periods on a computerCommunicate by phone and email with various departments and outside constituents. 

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  This position requires longer hours during the week for audits and to meet deadlines, as necessary. 

 

Required Education and Experience:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. 

  • 3 to 5 years of related experience. 

 

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • 5 to 7 years of related experience. 

  • Knowledge of Ellucian Banner financial systems preferred.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual/hourly salary range for this position is $80,000 - $84,000. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.   

 

This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
