Specific Job Title Part-Time Assistant Fencing Coach in Foil 

Reports to Head Fencing Coach 

Campus Queens 

 

Job Summary 

Assistant fencing coach should lead foil fencing team squad, design drills and activities in line with fencer’s experience and skill. Supervise practices and meets, prioritizing safety and reporting to the Head Fencing Coach.  

 

Essential Functions 

  • Assist in all aspects of coaching a nationally competitive Division 1 Fencing program, including thorough knowledge of the sport, coaching strategies, and fencer development. 
  • Assist in overall program planning and organization. 
  • Assist in recruitment of student-athletes on international, national, and regional levels. 
  • Adhere to NCAA rules and Regulations which includes, self-reporting NCAA violation, when applicable. 
  • Lead foil squad in everyday practice and all scheduled competitions. 
  • Work within the framework of the department of athletics administration and coaches. 
  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, administration, staff, and alumni. 
  • Utilize all STJ Athletic Department required software programs to keep up to date on Fencing team calendars, athletic activities, reporting, and university records for the STJ Fencing Team. 

 

Competencies 

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. 
  • Be truly a leader and an example in behavior and sportsmanship.  
  • Experience teaching foil for at least 5 years on national or international level. 
  • Knowledge of NCAA and USFA fencing rules. 
  • Ability to give individual and group lessons.  
  • Organize technical and tactical drills during everyday practices. 

 

Work Environment 

All fencing practices will be held in the gym with appropriate fencing equipment.  

 

Physical Demand 

  • Assistant fencing coach must be in good physical condition to be able to perform individual lessons to students, travel to all scheduled college, national and international competitions.  
  • Assistant fencing coach will need occasionally to drive a university van to transport fencing student/athletes to and from school and practices/competitions. Valid Driver License required.  

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work 

This is a part-time position. Will required three days per week 2-3 hours’ university practice and supervise foil students at the NYC club every time they will be practicing there.  

 

Travel 

Assistant fencing coach must be available to travel to all St. John’s University scheduled competitions. 

 

Required Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in physical education and sport or 8+ years of high-level competitive experience as a Sabre fencer. 
  • Competitive coaching experience in foil 5+ years. 
  • Excellent computer skills. 

 

Additional Eligibility Qualifications  

Must pass all Safe Sport required courses and all university mandatory training.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $16,500 - $17,000. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

 

This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
