Division/Department Information


Established in 1908, the St. John’s University School of Education was the second school in New York State to award graduate degrees to teachers. The School of Education fosters close relationships with public, private, and parochial schools across the New York region and is greatly respected nationally and globally for preparing highly qualified teachers for success in today’s multicultural, inclusive learning environments. The Department of Education Specialties offers graduate programs in Special Education, Literacy, and

TESOL. The programs in Special Education are differentiated by age – early childhood, childhood, adolescence - and cover a range of career change, Masters, advanced certificates, and online offerings.




The Programs in Special Education in the Department of Education Specialties at St. John’s University is seeking applications for an Assistant tenure track position in Special Education. Responsibilities include teaching graduate level courses in Special Education at our Staten Island campus and online. The position requires the candidate to actively participate in student advisement, maintain an active research agenda, including seeking external grant funding, and contribute to Departmental interdisciplinary activities and initiatives. Engagement in academic service learning and field-supervision of graduate students at practicum sites in Staten Island and other boroughs will be expected.




The position requires an earned Doctorate in Special Education or related field (before start date) with a minimum 3 years of full-time teaching experience in areas of Childhood/or Adolescence Special Education working with culturally diverse students with disabilities in diverse schools and or community/clinical settings. Prior graduate level teaching experience is preferred. Candidate must demonstrate strong potential for scholarly activity and research publications. Experience and/or expertise in building effective school partnerships/teaching residencies in culturally diverse high needs, urban special education settings is valued. A strong commitment to anti-racism pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching practices is essential.
