Assistant Softball Coach  



Job Summary: The assistant softball coach will be responsible for assisting and reporting to the head coach in recruiting potential student-athletes, coaching, training, and practice/game strategy preparation for members of the softball team, with an emphasis on catcher and infield positions. 


Essential Functions: 

Specific coaching duties will include preparing catchers and infielders workouts and teaching advanced mechanics and skills for Division 1 level. Defensive strategies and pitch calling will also be required. This position also has a significant responsibility to ensure the academic success of student-athletes, engaging in public relations activities within the community, and administrative functions as assigned by the head coach. All coaches are required to abide by the rules and regulations established by St. John’s University, BIG EAST Conference, and the NCAA. St. John’s University is a member of the NCAA at the Division I level. This is a full-time position and will involve frequent travel with varying and sometimes very long hours. There will be substantial amounts of office work related to assigned tasks, such as recruit data base entries, Teamworks entries for travel and/or related academic or softball items, budgeting for expenses, practice plans, official visits and more.  

  • An emphasis on the catching and infield positions are an important requirement. Highlight the day-to-day activities of the position. 
  • Daily practice plans must be written to provide directions and clarity for the team. 
  • Effective communication between coaches and players is strongly required. 
  • Occasional field work and heavy lifting may be required at times. 
  • Willingness to assist each staff member with any task that is required by the head coach, athletic administration, or St. John’s University. 
  • Ongoing training and attention to the diversity, anti-racism and inclusion policies of St. John’s University are required. 



A strong commitment to the student-athlete concept and a working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations is required. 

The successful candidate will have an emphasis on coaching and recruiting catchers and infielders. Pitch calling in a collegiate game will be beneficial.  


Work Environment 

This job operates in a professional office environment.  

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. 


Physical Demands 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 


There will be daily: Throwing, hitting, catching of softballs/Occasional field set up, tarp duty/Lifting of pitching machine/Assistance with equipment for travel/Driving a 12-passenger van to local contest/Long periods of standing. 


Environmental Conditions 

Working for long periods outside in potentially harsh weather conditions. Dust from the field on occasion may blow if it's windy. 


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are generally Tuesday through Sunday with varying early morning starting times or later finishing times when returning from road trips. Working weekend hours is necessary. On call for occasional changes to plans or to help any student athlete is required.  



Overnight travel is required and common often for periods of 3 days or more. Local travel is also a requirement for contests vs. local opponents.  


Required Education and Experience:  

  • Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) and a minimum of 3 years of successful coaching experience and/or playing experience at the NCAA level is required. 
  • Must know all NCAA recruiting and playing rules and more at the D1 level 


Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • Master’s degree preferred. 



Additional Eligibility Qualifications 


Computer skills, Teamworks experience, Concur experience, ARMS recruiting service experience will all be necessary.
