Director of the Ozanam Scholars Program

Vincentian Institute for Social Action

 

 

Job Summary:

 

Reporting to the Executive Director for Mission and the Vincentian Institute for Social Action (V.I.S.A.), the Director of the Ozanam Scholars Program will provide leadership and management for the four-year student leadership program. This includes the design, implementation and maintenance of events and programs to promote academic scholarship, Vincentian service and global citizenship for approximately 100 students annually and approximately 200 alumni. This position is responsible for the supervision of one full-time administrator (Associate Director of the Ozanam Scholars Program), one part-time faculty member (Ozanam Scholars Faculty Advisor), and three (3) graduate assistants. The Director will also collaborate with faculty and academic colleges to support student research and development.

 

Job description:

 

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Ozanam Scholars Program, including the supervision of one full-time administrator (Associate Director of the Ozanam Scholars Program), one part-time faculty member (Ozanam Scholars Faculty Advisor), and three (3) graduate assistants;
  • Work closely with the Office of Business Affairs to manage the University operating budget of approximately $175,000 designated to support the program;
  • Provide vision and leadership in line with the University’s strategic plans;
  • In collaboration with the Ozanam Scholars Faculty Advisor, VISA’s Faculty Research Consortium (FRC) and the Ozanam Scholars Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC), develop research opportunities for sophomore, junior and senior scholars, and other workshops to enhance student research and leadership skills;
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of community partner relationships in Queens and Staten Island to support program-wide Vincentian service opportunities;
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director for Mission Assessment and the Office of Institutional Research, supervise the implementation of assessment measures and evaluations for students, community partners and faculty mentors;
  • Coordinate recruitment and evaluation of student cohorts and administrative staff;
  • Manage and maintain alumni communication with approximately 200 Ozanam Scholar alumni

 

Measurement and Evaluation:

 

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Mission Assessment to implement assessment tools measuring the impact of community partner Vincentian service projects;
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director for the Ozanam Scholars Program to track student development, Vincentian service hours and scholarship renewal evaluations

 

Recruitment:

 

  • Annually serve as chair of the committee to recruit, interview and select approximately 25 new eligible Ozanam Scholars;
  • Collaborate with Admissions, Financial Aid, and the University Freshman Center to develop and maintain recruitment and programming for incoming cohorts

 

Relationship Management:

 

  • Maintain positive working relationships with service partners, faculty, the Faculty Advisory Committee, colleges and other VISA constituents

 

Student Research:

 

  • In collaboration with the Faculty Advisor, Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC) and the Faculty Research Consortium (FRC), oversee the development and implementation of research activities across all cohorts, including Independent Study Proposal, Independent Study Research and Capstone Research; research workshops; Pitch Competition and Capstone Defense

 

Travel:

 

  • Responsible for traveling locally, nationally, and internationally to evaluate, support and supervise program excursions;
  • Responsible for coordination and implementation of senior trip travel and pre-trip workshops;
  • Responsible for coordination and travel for all junior and senior conferences

 

Professional Collaborations:

 

  • Collaborate with the Faculty Advisor and the Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC) to research participation and presentation opportunities at national conferences to promote program research;
  • Collaborate with the Editor of the Journal of Vincentian Social Action (JoVSA) in the development and creation of an annual Ozanam Scholar-specific issue featuring the Capstone Research projects of the senior cohort;
  • Monitor the development of all academic requirements (social justice minor, research workshops and program specific courses), meeting with the college deans and department chairs as needed;

 

Best Practices:

 

  •  Maintain national standards for the program through benchmarking and research

 

Additional Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide support to the Executive Vice President for Mission and the Executive Director for Mission and the Vincentian Institute for Social Action (VISA) regarding special projects and other duties as assigned

 

Competencies:

 

  • Firm understanding of and commitment to the Catholic and Vincentian components of the University’s Mission; strong interest in poverty alleviation, social justice, and community service in a post-secondary environment preferred;
  • Service-learning and/or community-based research experience
  • Global service-learning experience
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work on both Queens and Staten Island campuses as needed
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally as needed
  • Must be flexible to work weekend and evening hours as needed
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint; knowledge of Banner and Canvas is a plus
  • Strong organizational, analytical, supervisory and interpersonal skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • This position requires access to a University vehicle, with a preference for satisfactory results of a DMV check for driving record and a valid driver’s license

 

Supervisory Responsibility:

 

This position manages one full-time administrator, one part-time faculty member, and approximately three part-time graduate-level employees in the Vincentian Institute for Social Action (VISA) and is responsible for the hiring and performance management of the employees within that department:

  • Associate Director of the Ozanam Scholars Program (full-time administrator)
  • Ozanam Scholars Faculty Advisor/Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC) Chairperson (parti-time faculty member)
  • Approximately 3 Ozanam Scholar Graduate Assistants (part-time)

 

Work Environment

 

  • This job operates in a professional office environment.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc.

 

Physical Demands

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs. The employee must be able to travel locally, nationally and internationally using various forms of transportation, including airlines, trains, charter buses and University vans. Specific verbal abilities required by the employee include the ability to speak to large and small groups of students and faculty members, often presenting both in person and virtually.

 

Environmental Conditions

 

Due to the nature of the Vincentian service travel requirements for the Ozanam Scholars Program, the position requires the ability to travel locally, nationally and globally to underserved and under-resourced locations with small and large groups of Ozanam Scholars.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. However, in collaboration with the Executive Director for Mission and the Vincentian Institute for Social Action (VISA), these hours can be adjusted as this position often requires evening and weekend hours.

 

Travel

Travel is an integral part of this position, including the supervision of local, national and international Vincentian service trips and occasional research conferences, in addition to visits to the other NY campuses.

 

Required Education and Experience:

 

  • Masters degree in education, psychology, sociology, business or an appropriate social discipline;
  • Minimum five years experience in higher education or community agencies;
