Director of Violence Prevention/Sexual Violence Outreach, Awareness, and Response initiatives (SOAR)


Department:   Department of Student Wellness


Summary:  Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Wellness, the Director of Violence Prevention/Sexual Violence Outreach, Awareness, and Response initiatives (SOAR) provides the overall vision and underlying framework for the development of St. John’s violence prevention initiatives and support services for victims of sexual assault.   The successful candidate will provide leadership, vision, and strategic planning to enhance and implement violence prevention policies and initiatives, for a vibrant and diverse population of over 20,000 on the Queens and Staten Island campuses as well as St. John’s global campuses.


The recently expanded program for Wellness Education and Prevention is part of an integrated wellness area that also includes Student Health Services and the Center for Counseling and Consultation, Disabilities Services, and Campus Recreation. The Department of Student Wellness is composed of a multidisciplinary team of professionals including psychologists, social workers, counselors, consulting psychiatrist, nurses, a consulting physician, a nutritionist, and a team of graduate assistants. 


The successful candidate will:


  • Posses an expertise in developing and implementing success violence prevention programs tailored to the university environment
  • Will have experience designing a survivor-centered approach to responding to incidences of sexual violence.
  • Provide leadership and effective modeling of coalition building among departments within and beyond the Student Wellness and contributes to the Division of Student Affairs' and University’s strategic initiatives.  


Position Responsibilities:


  • Provide leadership and oversight to the development of St. John’s Sexual Violence Outreach, Awareness, and Response initiatives.
  • Interface and serve as a liaison with a broad range of academic and non academic departments including, but not limited to, the Counseling and Consultation Center, Public Safety, Residential Life, Student Health Services, Wellness Education and Prevention, Office of Disabilities Services, Campus Recreation, Veterans Services, Athletics, ROTC, Fraternity and Sorority Life, and various other departments and student organizations to promote prevention initiatives that alter the campus climate toward sexual violence.
  • Consult with SJU faculty and staff regarding how to best support students who have experienced sexual trauma. The Director will conduct trainings and presentations across campus to increase awareness of available support and reporting resources, and also to facilitate a more supportive climate and trauma informed response to survivors.
  • Develop and supervise training programs for faculty, staff and various student groups such as residential advisors to promote educational awareness, prevention and support for victims of sexual assault; coordinate educational programs and activities with various departments and student groups; design pamphlets, brochures, videos and other related publications
  • Develop and supervise the implementation evidence-informed comprehensive education and awareness program to reduce sexual violence at St. John’s with an emphasis on primary prevention and environmental change.
  • Supervise the ongoing development and expansion of St. John’s Bystander Intervention Program and trainings.
  • Design systems to evaluate the effectiveness of programming efforts, through routine assessment and evaluations.
  • Document and catalog all education and awareness program, evidencing compliance with relevant Violence Against Women Act and Title IX and New York State 129b requirements.
  • Assist with the development, review and revision of SJU’s policies and procedures addressing sexual violence in order to for SJU to stay current with federal, state, and city laws (i.e., Title IX, SaVE Act, Clery, NYS 129b). 
  • Lead the university’s response to sexual assault, providing supervision and oversight of SJU’s Confidential Campus Support Advisors who provide direct one-on-one support and advocacy to students who experience sexual harassment, stalking, relationship violence or sexual assault.
  • Provide guidance and consultation to SJU to ensure all aspects of survivor-focused services and resources to survivors of sexual, gender-based and intimate partner violence; sexual and street harassment are engaging evidence based practices that are survivor centered.
  • Serve as a liaison with community partners (i.e.,, SAVI, Elmhurst Hospital, NYPD/SVU) and establish new partnerships to ensure survivor centered services for SJU students who have experienced sexual violence. Furthermore, the Director will assist in designing and training others involved in SJU’s response to sexual violence, including members of the Counseling and Consultation Center, Health Services, Public Safety and Title IX investigators in a survivor centered approach to sexual violence.
  • Oversee and maintain a confidential database of incidence, compile statistics of incidents reported, analyze data, and develop aggregate de-identified monthly and annual reports (i.e., Title IX, Clery, NYS 129b, etc).
  • Develop and manage the budget for the Office of Violence Prevention/Sexual Violence Outreach, Awareness, and Response initiatives (SOAR).
  • Supervise team of Confidential Campus Support Advocates and graduate assistants.
  • Secure external funding and partnerships with City, State and National organizations and agencies to support the SJU’s violence prevention efforts.
  • Assist the Office of Student Wellness in it overall goal of making St. John’s one of the healthiest and safest campuses in the US. This individual will help to increase the awareness of health-related information and services that are available to promote student wellness and support academic success at both the Staten Island and Queens Campuses. This includes a variety of health-related issues including but not limited to alcohol, drug, and tobacco use, sexual assault, eating disorders, relationships, and mental health.
  • Must be able to perform job responsibilities virtual and in-person environment.
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Master’s degree required, preferably in Social Work, Health Education, Community/Public Health or Counseling, or related field
  • Experience with a college student population strongly preferred
  • Three to five years experience in program implementation and coordination, particularly in health education preferred.
  • Background and experience in the area of sexual violence prevention is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of current health, mental health, alcohol and other drug, and social issues on university campuses
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and to collaborate with other departments
  • Demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity, and ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong presentation and discussion skills
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience and skill in Microsoft Office programs
  • Familiarity with a variety of social media networks
