JOB SUMMARY: The SC4 Community Choir is open to any student or community member who enjoys singing. Director is to ensure all choir members are registered per College requirements. The choir presents several programs each year at the college and for social and service clubs in the area. When scheduled, the choir participates in the presentation of a major Broadway musical in conjunction with other performing arts departments within the College. Classes will be held one night per week for two hours per class (currently Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Use basic conducting techniques to direct community choir.
- Lead warm-ups and teach songs (with and without sheet music).
- Assess group dynamics.
- Understand the vocal range of male and female singers.
- Work with “pitch challenged” singers.
- Prepare scores and develop repertoire.
- Recruit members to build overall membership.
- Direct up to five, including outreach, concerts which will require travel to performance sights, set-up, performance, and tear-down. On campus concerts will be a minimum of 60 minutes and up to 90 minutes in length.
- Collaborate with other groups for concerts. This can be other choirs, ensembles or soloists and/or bands.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
OUTCOMES:
- Expand choir member’s knowledge of performance choir including developing and expanding projection and expression, reducing self-consciousness and inhibition, working within an ensemble, and creating a performance to be viewed by the public.
- Grow the number of participants in the Community Choir striving for a core of 30 members.
- The choir learns and performs a diverse repertoire including music of many cultures and faiths appealing to all community members.
- Produce quality performances that are well attended and ensure collaboration concerts are part of the season’s schedule.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Supervision received from the Chief Academic Officer.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field and minimum five years experience.
- A strong background in formal music training, and a basic understanding of written music theory.
- A strong desire to build community relationships through group singing with the ability to sing confidently and in good tune.
- The ability to learn, hear, and sing harmonies independently.
