POSITION SUMMARY
 
As the Vice President of Safety, s/he will spearhead the organization's safety initiatives, setting the gold standard for safety culture, policies, and procedures. Reporting directly to the executive leadership team, s/he will be entrusted with crafting and executing strategies that ensure the well-being of employees across all operational fronts, cementing the company’s position as an industry leader in safety excellence. This leader will be responsible for building and maintaining a culture of safety. S/he will embody safety as a critical driver for the business.
 
 
This position can be based out of Washington DC area (Dulles, VA), Northern California (Union City), Southern California (Garden Grove), Northwest (Portland, OR), or Texas (Dallas). This role will require a willingness to travel extensively (~60%) to project sites nationwide for both over-night and in-day trips for project kickoffs, incident reports and construction.
 
 
 
 
What you’ll do:
 
 
Strategic and Cultural Leadership

  • Define and champion the company's safety vision, objectives, and strategies to foster a culture of safety excellence.
  • Lead safety business planning efforts, aligning safety initiatives with corporate goals and objectives.
  • Drive the development and implementation of company-wide safety and health strategies, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Enforce client safety standards and executive expectations, serving as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies on safety matters.
  • Flexible Leadership style that allows you to vector effectively between diverse client and audience types, ranging from skilled apprentices to top-line executive presence.
  • Build a National Peer Group with other Safety Leading like minded professionals to constantly push the envelope driving Stronger safety culture and initiatives with like progressive companies and owners.
  • Foster and enable a culture of care and safety first where all employees, regardless of level in the organization, are empowered to mitigate safety issues.
 
 
Talent Management and Development

  • Assist in having each Division Safety Manager to build a local community of practice within the Division and external with likeminded companies and clients so we are seen as an industry thought leader.
  • Drive accountability for safety managers and administrators to accomplish safety program goals, compliance, and initiatives.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment, empowering direct reports to drive safety initiatives and achieve organizational goals.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to enhance individual and team effectiveness.
  • Partner with division leadership to develop succession plans and talent pipelines to ensure continuity and sustainability in safety leadership roles.
  • Mentor and train safety personnel, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development within the safety department.
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to develop robust recruiting programs to ensure adequate talent pipeline
 
 
Program Management

  • Oversee all aspects of safety program management across multiple fabrication/assembly plants, construction projects sites including out-of-market locations, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure safety performance, implementing continuous improvement initiatives to mitigate hazards.
  • Provide technical expertise on safety policies and programs, conducting training sessions and workshops to enhance safety awareness.
  • Facilitate sharing of safety resources across the organization
  • Stay abreast of regulatory changes and industry best practices, collaborating with stakeholders to implement effective safety measures.
 


Incident Management

  • Lead incident management efforts, ensuring timely and thorough investigations, root cause analyses, regulatory reporting, and effective sharing of lessons learned for future prevention
  • Strong Investigative Skills to get at the root cause of issues to see where we can improve.
  • Ability to work under pressure and not be reactive
  • Researcher/teacher – always looking for tools and tactics that can improve our approaches and willingness to partner with our Operations, Engineering, field and fabrication folks, to design safer ways to perform our work – which requires the ability to communicate effectively with helpers to our Leadership. Collaborate with human resources, risk management and insurance teams to mitigate safety-related risks and liabilities effectively.
  • Lead workers' compensation and insurance efforts, ensuring proper claims management and proactive risk mitigation.
  • Represent the company in litigation proceedings related to safety incidents, cultivating strong partnerships with corporate legal and human resources teams.

What you bring to the table:
 
The successful candidate will have progressive experience in managing safety programs on large-scale construction or other similar job sites. S/he will have extensive knowledge of construction related OSHA, MSHA, federal, state and local regulatory standards, coupled with strong communication skills to convey safety policies effectively.

This leader will have proven leadership experience in managing internal staff and third-party consultants, with a track record of driving organizational change and achieving results. S/he will have experience working for a union contractor and managing safety programs that are collaborative with Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs). S/he will be able to collaborate with clients, trade partners, and field leadership. The successful candidate will have strong attention to detail, organizational skills and ability to work independently in a fast paced environment.
