Shenandoah University’s Office of Human Resources is accepting applications for an HR Generalist. This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia. 

Shenandoah University is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented HR Generalist to play a key role in supporting our community of faculty, staff, and students. In this position, you will be responsible for a wide range of HR functions, serving as a central point of contact for new staff onboarding while ensuring the efficient operation of our HR technology systems and processes. 

The Human Resource Generalist will assist in managing the daily operations of the Human Resources (HR) department, including hiring student Work-Study employees, administering employee leave, and enforcing company policies and practices. They will oversee the collection and reporting of annual audits, serve as primary contact for any HRIS system implementations as well as crosstrain with all HR staff job duties. 

  1. The Generalist will be the primary point of contact for any HRIS System projects, software updates, and policy implementations.

    • Collaborate with SU IT and Payroll Staff on any system implementations, including the crossover to other SU platforms such as Self Service (Hornet Hub), Etrieve, Canvas, etc.
    • Maintain data in the HRIS and on Canvas.
    • Enter all leave accruals for vacation, personal, and medical time per the faculty and staff handbooks
    • Assist SU employees, in person, by telephone, and by email with issues regarding timekeeping, leave tracking, benefits, etc.
    • Enter and or Update Holiday schedule, payroll, address changes, and maintaining retirement plans for all benefited staff and faculty
  2. Onboarding new benefited staff in an online platform

    • Work with Directors to initiate onboarding, collecting approvals, new hire paperwork, and screenings.
    • Hire and build new positions in Colleague when needed
  3. Benefit audits

    • Retirement Pentegra, Emeriti, HR, census reporting, service awards, and others as assigned.
    • Process, reconcile, and remit premiums for all benefit plans

       4. Benefit Data Entry

    • Assisting in enrollment (and un-enrollment) in benefit vendors, Colleague, etc.
    • Assist with the annual Benefit Open Enrollment event

       5. Employee training backup

    • Enroll and monitor annual and new hire training modules in designated platform(s)

       6. Backup Staff for:

    • Job postings in Rival
    • Work Study Student Employment hiring periods (July through September).
      • Collecting I-9 Forms, reviewing tax forms, tracking progress on shared portals, and hiring into the Ellucian system.
    • Onboarding of Shenandoah Summer Music Theater Employment.

        7. Job duties and tasks may be assigned at any time with the growing needs of Human Resources and Shenandoah University. Assist with other HR staff projects and events.


Required Skills

Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills are a must. Ability to prioritize tasks and act with confidentiality and professionalism. Proficiency and ability to quickly learn the HRIS (Ellucian) and talent management (Rival), among other SU systems.

  • Sitting for long periods of the day

Work Environment:

  • General office setting.

Required Experience

Education:

  • Required- Level: High School Diploma or Equivalent      
  • Preferred- Level: Associate's Degree or Bachelor’s Degree

Work Experience:

  • Required- Minimum years: 3-5 Years in an office or professional setting
  • Preferred- Minimum years: 3-5 Years in higher education or a Human Resources setting
    • Specific type of work: Colleague/Ellucian or equivalent computer systems
