Shenandoah University’s Department of Athletic Bands is accepting applications for an Assistant Director of Athletic Bands. This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.
Shenandoah University is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Assistant Director of Athletic Bands (Percussion Focus) to join our Athletic Bands leadership team. We seek a dynamic, collaborative, and innovative educator who will assist in leading a growing and vibrant Athletic Band program while providing specialized instruction in percussion techniques, pedagogy, and performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as Assistant Director for the Shenandoah University Athletic Band program, including planning, meetings, rehearsals, performances, and game-day operations for the Marching Band and Pep Band.
- This position is responsible for coordinating the preparation and ongoing musical development of all percussionists within the context of Athletic Bands, including the Shenandoah University Marching Band Drumline (includes both battery and rock band), as well as the Buzzin’ Dozen Pep Band.
- Design, arrange, or collaborate on percussion music, warm-ups, and drill for the Athletic Band Program.
- Assist with Athletic Band student recruitment initiatives.
- Assist in organizing band camps, clinics, festivals, and public performances.
- Collaborate with other band staff and faculty on overall artistic and educational vision.
- Maintain equipment inventory and oversee maintenance and logistics.
- Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive culture that supports student success and diversity.
- Supervision and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate student employees, as well as student leadership.
- Deliver instruction and supervision at all scheduled rehearsals, performances, and other services (including weekends, summer, and holidays as required.)
- Schedule and conduct additional drumline rehearsals that support the success of the section as needed.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Master’s degree in Music, Music Education, or a related field.
- Demonstrated success in percussion instruction (battery and front ensemble).
- Experience teaching or assisting with marching band at the high school, collegiate, or drum corps level.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a creative team.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with instructors and engage with students, and ability to promote teamwork and self-discipline.
Preferred:
- Doctoral degree (DMA, PhD) or ABD status.
- Previous experience working with college-level or competitive high school percussion programs.
- Experience with arranging/writing for percussion ensembles and marching percussion.
- Collegiate-level teaching experience and student recruitment.
