Shenandoah University, a private, coeducational institution with its main campus located in the historic and scenic Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Eleanor Wade Custer School of Nursing. 

The Dean of the School of Nursing oversees a thriving, growing range of academic programs, facilities, technologies and business operations that are deeply connected into the health care communities in the Northern Shenandoah Valley and Northern Virginia.  The nursing programs operate at three locations.  The majority of students attend the Winchester campus, where the nursing programs are located in a new 72,000 sq. ft. Health and Life Sciences Building, with state-of-the-art classrooms, skills and anatomy labs, and simulation centers. Graduate and undergraduate degree programs also are offered at our sites at Scholar Plaza in Ashburn, Virginia and the Inova Center for Personalized Health in Fairfax, Virginia.  Each site has dedicated faculty and classrooms across sites are connected by video conferencing technology.

The CCNE-accredited (2019) School of Nursing’s mission is “to educate lifelong learners who provide holistic care and promote wellness, inspired by global health ideals,” and is led by a highly creative faculty, dedicated to excellence in nursing education, with a focus on new, innovative models for curriculum delivery.  Several faculty have been successful with HRSA training grant support, and the school is unique in Virginia with the only Nurse Midwifery faculty and program.  The school enrolls more than 400 students and offers degree programs at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels along with certificates in specialized areas of study listed below:  

Undergraduate: traditional Four-Year BSN; BSN Transfer Track; RN to BSN; Veteran to BSN; Accelerated Second Degree.  Graduate: MSN-Family Nurse Practitioner; MSN-Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner; MSN-Nurse Midwifery; BSN-DNP with a specialty in FNP or PMH and Doctor of Nursing Practice. Post-graduate certificates:Nurse-Midwifery, Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

The school is part of a vibrant university enrolling more than 4,000 students at its main and satellite campuses, with traditional and creative combinations of educational opportunities through programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Shenandoah Conservatory, and the Schools of Nursing, Business, Pharmacy, Health Professions and Education and Human Development. 

The Dean reports to the Provost, Dr. Adrienne Bloss, and is a member of the Academic and University Cabinets. The Dean provides strategic and administrative leadership to the School of Nursing.  Together with the faculty and staff, the Dean promotes excellence in teaching, clinical competency and research leadership.  The Dean is committed to developing internal and external partnerships, and to fostering student and program success.

Required qualifications include a doctorate in nursing from an accredited institution; senior leadership experience in higher education; knowledge of budgeting and strategic planning; excellent advocacy, communication, and interpersonal skills.  Preferred qualifications include a national reputation within the broader nursing community, experience with interprofessional education, and a record of scholarship such as funded research or other grant-writing experience.
