USW Laborer - Class B

PER SOCCo Policy DND-HR-PRO-00001: Internal employees must be in current position for (1) year or greater to be eligible to apply.

THIS POSITION WILL BE REPRESENTED AS PART OF A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT UNIT. 

Employees hired into the Laborer position will have a starting rate of $17.741 but will not receive the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) associated until they reach their third (3rd) year anniversary dates, at which time they will have attained the top rate in the classification and be entitled to COLA. 

Position Overview

In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, performs under direct supervision various types of manual labor, primarily in roads and grounds maintenance. Uses pick and shovel, etc., hand power mowers, operates air pumps, pneumatic tools, power equipment, steam cleaning and asphalt heating equipment. Operates pickup trucks, forklifts, and farm tractors. Uses slings, etc. in moving furniture and equipment. Loads and unloads barrels or other containers of scrap metal, trash, etc. Uses various hand tools as necessary. Responsible for proper housekeeping and safety procedures. Required to read comprehensibly and to write legibly. Required to adequately communicate with co-workers and supervision. May assist other hourly employees, and performs other duties as assigned by supervision. The specific work assignment may include duties or activities that assist and support management in one or more of the following functional areas, in addition to other duties as assigned:

 

  • Uses pick and shovel, etc., hand power mowers, operates air pumps, pneumatic tools, power equipment, steam cleaning and asphalt heat equipment.
  • Operates pickup trucks, forklifts, and farm tractors.
  • Uses slings, etc., in moving furniture and equipment.
  • Loads and unloads barrels or other containers of scrap metal, trash, etc. Uses various hand tools as necessary.
  • May assist other hourly employees, and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for proper housekeeping and safety procedures. Required to read comprehensibly and write legibly.
  • Required to adequately communicate with co-workers and supervision

Required Contingencies:

·         Pre-Employment Physical (office or field work)

·         Drug Screen

·         The ability to obtain/maintain "L" or "Q" Clearance one year from hire date

·         Background Check

·         Any site required training

Required Skills

  • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50#.
  • Must be able to spend most working time on feet (standing or walking) with, but not limited to, some balancing, bending, climbing, pushing, pulling, raising both arms above shoulder, full use of both hands, crawling, crouching, reaching, working at high speed, seeing-color vision, seeing-depth perception, and normal hearing.
  • Must be able to work in an environment that may be dusty, dry, hot, wet, noisy, humid, or have sudden temperature changes due to inside/outside work, and with conditions that may include, but not limited to, exposure to burns, acids, solvents, oil/greases, moving objects, mechanical hazards and radioactive material.
  • Must be able to wear Company provided respiratory and other personal protective equipment when required.
  • Must have valid State driver’s license
  • Must be able to operate both standard and automatic transmission vehicles.
  • Must possess a DOE “L” clearance or the ability to obtain an “L” clearance
