Job Summary:

Responsible for assisting and performing relay and equipment functional testing and commissioning as required for each project, as directed by the project lead.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  •         Assist in the day-to-day testing and commissioning activities being performed on the assigned project.
  •         Become familiar with all applicable policies and procedures to adequately perform commissioning activities as assigned.
  •         Assist with project documentation on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, as required.
  •         Attend project safety and planning meetings as required.
  •        Must be willing to travel overnight as needed to fulfill job responsibilities.
  •         Identify safety hazards associated with the project and contribute to a task-hazard-mitigation analysis.
  •         Identify human performance risks and contribute to a task-risk-mitigation analysis.
  •         The above list of duties is not to be construed as an exhaustive list; other duties logically associated with the position may be assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate experience with utility transmission P&C relay functional testing and commissioning projects.
  • Thorough understanding of NFPA70E, electrical safety, and demonstrate understanding of electrical isolation procedures.
  • Basic understanding of electrical theory and protective relaying principles.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical wiring diagrams and schematics.
  • Ability to use a variety of relay test sets and automated relay testing software.
  • Basic understanding of network communications including TCP/IP, DNP, Modbus and media structures such as Ethernet and Serial over copper, fiber optics, telephone or wireless systems and powerline carrier systems.
  • Familiar with construction and apparatus testing standards and procedures. NETA III or IV certification is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of NERC Standards and CIP policies and procedures and required compliance documentation.
  • Strong working knowledge with common software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Experience with project management software is a plus.
  • Strong working knowledge with common electrical industry software applications from industry manufacturers such as SEL, GE, Cooper, Novatech, ABB, Siemens, etc.
  •  Must show the ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally with customers and other team members.
  • Demonstrate organizational skills to include on time reporting of time and expenses, weekly status reports, and any other documentation and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrate the responsibility required to maintain a professional appearance as well as keeping tools, test equipment, and vehicles clean, organized, and up to date with service and calibrations.

 

Work Environment:

  •         Work within energized and de-energized medium and high voltage electrical substations and control houses.
  •       Must be able to work occasional overtime including nights, weekends, and some holidays.
  •        Must be able to travel on overnight, multi-day, out-of-town projects.
  •        Must be available to take calls and provide technical advice outside of the normal workday.
  •        Standing, climbing, walking, lifting, carrying, and grasping are all required.

 

Education and Work Experience:

  •         Associate’s degree in electrical engineering technology or similar.
  •         OR equivalent military training e.g., Army Prime Power or Naval Nuclear Power fields.
  •         OR 3 years of P&C substation commissioning or related experience,
  •         OR 5 years NETA relay acceptance or maintenance testing experience.
  •         Ability to achieve NETA level III within 12 months.

 

Other Requirements:

  •        Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check, education verification, motor vehicle report, physical abilities test, an approved hair and urine drug screen, as well as periodic, unannounced random testing.
  •        Must have a valid driver’s license and must have or be willing to obtain an endorsement to operate a combined vehicle weight up to 26k lbs.
  •        Must be able to lift and maneuver at least 50 lbs.
  •        Must be willing to obtain a company paid TWIC, OSHA 10 hour, NFPA 70-E, and CPR training.
