Precise Systems is seeking an experienced Metabolic Engineer for the development of novel chassis strains in non-conventional yeast (i.e. Yarrowia lipolytica, Pichia pastoris, Kluyveromyces marxianus). The ideal candidate will have direct experience in the design, construction, and optimization of complex pathways in non-model yeast as well as have acquired experience with analytical techniques necessary to support their success. This work will be done at DEVCOM Chemical Biological Center (CBC), the primary Department of Defense technical organization for non-medical chemical and biological defense.
All work is performed on site, in Edgewood, MD.
Duties:
- Carry out hands-on construction of non-conventional yeast strains of interest in a BSL-2 laboratory setting
- Perform validation of assembly and function
- Clearly and completely communicate findings
- Thoroughly document progress through use of laboratory notebooks or similar record keeping systems
- Participate in data analysis, troubleshooting, and further development as needed
- Contribute to the preparation of documents, presentations, data packages, etc.
Required Skills:
- Standard molecular biology/cloning techniques (bacterial transformation/screening, PCR, restriction digest, gel electrophoresis, media/buffer preparation, etc.)
- Multiple DNA assembly techniques (ligation, Gibson, InFusion/SLIC, Golden Gate, etc.)
- Growth and transformation experience with non-model yeast systems
- Targeted and random genomic integration, CRISPR knock-ins/outs, and/or base editing in non-conventional yeast systems
- Basic protein assay and purification experience (e.g. PAGE, chromatography techniques, quantitation, etc.)
- Experience in analytical chemistry including:
- Gas chromatography (GC)
- Mass Spectrometry (MS)
- High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
- Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR)
- Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis)
- Ability to obtain and maintain Secret level clearance
Additional Preferred Skills:
- Heterologous enzyme engineering for natural products/enzyme production in yeast
- Mutagenesis/library screening of exogenous proteins
- Working knowledge of NGS, -omics, statistical analysis/design of experiments
Education:
- M.S. with 3+ years’ experience engineering non-conventional yeast or a Ph.D. (0+ years) focused on non-conventional yeast strain engineering in a relevant field.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Due to the sensitivity of customer-related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.

Compensation at Precise Systems is determined by various factors, including education, experience, skills, competencies, and contract-specific requirements. The salary range for this position is $76,709.46 to $103,428.48 (annualized USD). This range represents the standard pay for this role and is just one component of Precise Systems’ total compensation package.
