This Cold Spray Operator Engineering Technician IV (30084), also known as a Cold Spray Technician, plays a critical role in applying specialized coatings and conducting repairs using cold spray technology. This advanced technique involves depositing metal particles at high speeds onto a substrate, enhancing its performance or restoring its functionality. The ideal candidate will be able to perform the following duties, as well as possess the following education and experience:

Duties:

  • Operating and maintaining cold spray equipment
  • Preparing substrates for coating
  • Handling materials safely, and performing quality control inspections and process tests.
  • Operators also collaborate with senior operators and engineers, communicate with clients,
  • Adhere to safety protocols, and maintain a clean workspace. 
  • Documentation of work performed, environmental records, safety records, and test results is also part of the role.
  • Perform hand sprays and robotic sprays.
  • Program robots to perform spray functions.
  • Operate cold spray machines to execute prescribed spray processes with precision.
  • Use proper procedures and PPE to handle consumable materials that include powdered metals and inert high pressure compressed gases.
  • Prepare substrates of various kinds to receive powder applications.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, calibration, repair, and troubleshooting of cold spray systems.
  • Assist with standard operating procedures and other technical documentation development.
  • Use power tools such as grinders, drills, and saws for spray project preparation or finishing.
  • Use testing and measuring equipment such as electrical multi-testers, pressure gauges, torque measuring tools, calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Maintain qualifications/certifications on essential equipment and processes in accordance with DOD directives.

Desired Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with an additional two (2) years of experience.
  • Associate’s Degree or Certification in Electrical Trades is preferred, but not required.

Desired Experience:

  • Minimum of 4 years equivalent relevant work experience.
  •  Experience in a manufacturing environment, customer-facing roles, or robotic programming advantageous.
  • Key skills include the ability to interpret technical documents,
  •  use precision measurement tools, strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail,
  •  the ability to follow instructions, communication and teamwork skills, and proficiency with basic computer software.
  • Welding experience strongly preferred but not required.
  • Robotic programming experience strongly preferred but not required.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, cold spray recipes, operating and maintenance instructions, work instructions, procedure manuals.
  • Write routine reports, correspondence, inventory summaries, and reports using prescribed format, and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
  • Ability to handle communication with customers in an extremely professional manner.
  • Proficient in basic math skills with high attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel.

Work Environment:

  • Cold spray operators typically work in a manufacturing or industrial setting, often within a production environment. The work may involve exposure to noise, dust, and potentially hazardous materials. Operators are required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safety guidelines. Travel for training or off-site assignments required.

  • Mechanical Aptitude: A good understanding of mechanical principles and the ability to operate and maintain machinery. 
  • Attention to Detail: Accuracy and precision are crucial for ensuring quality coatings. 
  • Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to identify and troubleshoot issues that may arise during the spraying process. 
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication with team members and supervisors is essential. 
  • Physical Stamina: The job may involve standing for extended periods and lifting moderate weights. 
  • Knowledge of Materials: Familiarity with different materials used in cold spray processes can be beneficial. 
  • Safety Awareness: A strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. The employee must be able to see differences in color, widths, and lengths of lines such as those on design and schematic drawings.

 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Inside: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.  A job is considered “inside” if the worker spends approximately 75 percent or more of the time inside.

This position is covered by the Service Contract Labor Standard under a Wage Determination.  As such Under the SCA selected candidates are entitled to both the hourly rate aforementioned and a health and welfare benefit. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Due to the sensitivity of customer-related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.
