The position is laboratory based. There is limited flexibility for occasional off-site working..
Precise Systems seeks a Battery Research Scientist who will work as a leading member of the technical team performing R&D activities in an advanced battery research group at a U.S. Navy laboratory. Candidates must have applied research experience developing materials, components and/or management systems for lithium-ion or similar chemistry batteries to advance performance or safety aspects. Ideal applicants are adaptable to changing projects, self-starters, have the ability to work independently, are natural troubleshooters with a vision to translate basic and applied research into tangible technologies and capabilities. The research efforts follow the science, and our teams have more latitude than what is offered by commercial R&D environments. This is a lead position and conducting briefings for various groups, including non-researchers, is also a part of the position. Ideally, the candidate will have the following traits:
Duties:
- Design, develop and execute experimental research plans to support lithium-ion performance and safety programs.
- Fabricate experimental coin and pouch cells for electrochemical, spectroscopic, optical and materials characterization.
- Collect, organize, analyze materials and battery characterization data.
- Communicate data results at weekly progress report meetings.
- Write reports and articles for publication in academic literature.
- Prepare and provide presentations at scientific conferences and program reviews.
- Perform basic post-mortem analysis of electrochemical cells.
- Engage with R&D scientists and engineers to support battery research and development efforts.
- Possess familiarity with tools and methods for processing large sets of battery data.
Required Education:

Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry or a related field is required
Required Experience:
- 3+ years of experience in industrial or academic settings related to lithium-ion batteries (materials, cell components, cells and cell assembly or battery management) is required
- Experience with galvanostatic battery cycling is required
- Experience with thermal characterization of commercial battery cells to include, isothermal calorimetry and accelerating rate calorimetry is preferred
- Expertise in in-operando characterization of experimental battery cells to include optical, UV-vis, computed tomography and high energy, synchrotron-level, characterization is preferred
- Demonstrated expertise and extensive hands-on experience in fabrication, characterization and evaluation of battery materials, electrodes and cells
- Strong knowledge of electrochemical processes in batteries and understanding of state-of-the-art advancements published in journal literature
- Motivated to work independently and within a dynamic multi-disciplinary team of likeminded scientists and engineers in support of the U.S. Navy mission.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Due to the sensitivity of customer related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.

Compensation at Precise Systems is determined by various factors, including education, experience, skills, competencies, and contract-specific requirements. The salary range for this position is $76,236.48 to $114,354.72 (annualized USD). This range represents the standard pay for this role and is just one component of Precise Systems’ total compensation package.
