Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Technician.

In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for specialized lab techniques such as DNA extraction, protein extraction, running gels, performing ELISAs. The person must be highly motivated and organized. This person will be responsible for tissue culture, mouse handling, performing DNA extraction, RNA extraction, qPCR. They will maintain RedCap databases for biospecimens, collaborating with lab members and maintain lab inventory, compliance and general the organization of the lab. The candidate will be expected to have had undergraduate and graduate level courses in biology and hold a Master of Science degree, Or a Bachelor of Science degree and 2 years of experience in wet lab work and be able to work independently with some supervision.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lab and Research Duties  Able to perform basic and more advanced lab duties. Keep a meticulous electronic lab notebook. After an initial training if needed the candidate will perform lab duties which include cell culture, mouse colony maintenance, extract DNA from blood samples, run gels, perform DNA and protein assays. Prepare data for presentations, posters and manuscripts, participate in lab meetings and performs other related duties as required. Must be able to maintain/modify IACUC animal research and human subjects IRB protocols. Maintain RedCap databases for biospecimens.
  • Judgment/Decision-Making - Is able to recognize problems as they occur; and through the application of appropriate policy/ procedure, determine and/or recommends the appropriate solution. Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to ensure accuracy. Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention.
  • Communication/Relationship with Others - Cooperates, communicates and relates well to all levels of Medical Center employees. Listens carefully to others in order to respond appropriately, answer questions or obtain needed information. Communicates ideas, problems, suggestions, and messages in a timely and effective manner. Maintains the confidentiality of all research information. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Assist in Developing Procedures - Assists in implementing new procedures and protocols to support experiments. Participates actively in developing, recommending and implementing new approved procedures, or modifications to existing protocols and procedures. Maintains and updates technical knowledge.

 

Additional Position Specific Responsibilities:
This lab is investigating an eye disease known as keratoconus, where the cornea, the transparent, outermost layer of the eye, becomes progressively thin and leads to loss of vision. In severe cases a cornea transplant may be required. There is a strong genetic component in this condition, and oxidative stress plays a role in the pathological changes of the cornea. The research involves genetic analyses of DNA sequences, transcriptomic and proteomic studies of tissues and tear fluid. The lab also utilizes mouse models and organoid cell culture models to address specific scientific questions.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Life Sciences or a related field with one year of experience. Advanced (beyond basic lab training will be accepted in lieu of experience as assessed by the hiring Principal Investigator). Effective oral and written communication skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master of Science Degree in Life Sciences, biology, genetics or a related field is required. Experience in some areas of basic cellular immunology, molecular biology, tissue culture

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $55,650.00 - $65,242.66 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
