NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center, providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. Our Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center delivers comprehensive and specialized care for patients with traumatic injuries. The Stroke Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is designated by the New York State Department of Health as a Primary Stroke Center, with expert neurologists available to provide treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additionally, NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk has multiple outpatient sites, including an outpatient wound care center, a hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Trauma Registrar - Trauma - 08:00 AM - 04:00 PM. 

The trauma registry professional is responsible for the collection of data that is current, validated and correct; as this data is utilized: to evaluate the effectiveness of the trauma program in treating the injured, to demonstrate compliance with national standards, and to assure ongoing quality monitoring for performance improvement and patient safety. The role involves the review of electronic medical records, the utilization of injury scoring systems, and the validation of data prior to national submission. The registry professional works as part of the trauma center team and reports to the lead registrar and the trauma program manager.

Job Responsibilities:

    1. Review relevant reports and data sources to identify patients for inclusion in the trauma registry utilizing the most current national, state and local inclusion criteria.
    2. Utilize data abstraction principles to review medical records for the purposes of abstracting information on the injury event, injuries sustained, care and treatment, and patient outcome.
    3. Apply clinical knowledge to individual cases to identify performance improvement metrics, deviations from institutional guidelines and issues requiring further review.
    4. Collaborate with clinical team to enhance documentation to accurately describe injury severity and patient events.
    5. Review and interpret the medical record and assign injury severity coding in accordance with the AAAM AIS guidelines for injury scoring.
    6. Assign pre-existing conditions in accordance with national standards.
    7. Utilize ICD-10 CM and PCS codes to report pre-existing conditions, injuries and procedures performed.
    8. Communicate trends to trauma program leadership.
    9. Maintain current clinical knowledge of traumatic injury, resuscitation, care and treatment and outcome. Accrue an average of at least 8 hours of trauma related CE annually. Complete and ICD-10 update every 5 years after initial training. 
    10. Represent the trauma program and/or participate actively in committees within the trauma center, in the local community, at the state and national level. 
    11. Participates in data validity processes and supports the trauma program with verification and designation as a trauma center. 
    12. Support the mission and vision of the Trauma Center at NYU Langone Hospital. 
    13. Maintains confidentiality of data.

 

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a 1. Current licensure in NYS as a Registered Professional Nurse
a. In lieu of this, candidates with college level anatomy and physiology courses, and relevant patient care experience may be considered.
2. 1-3 years of clinical experience, preferably trauma related.
3. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Ability to adhere to a deadline.
4. Computer skills including: Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).
Within 12 months of employment:
1. Successfully complete the American Trauma Societys Trauma Registrar course (or other state trauma course if available).
2. Successfully complete the Injury Scaling Course offered by the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM AIS) course.
3. Successfully complete an ICD-10 Course..

Required Licenses: Registered Nurse License-NYS

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Bachelors degree in nursing or a health care related field
2. Trauma Registry experience. Experience with data abstraction from the medical record.
3. Database experience.

NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $47,103.96 - $73,944.73 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
