Position Summary:


We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Veterinary Technician.

Responsible for the husbandry of the laboratory animal species for the facility and for all necessary technical procedures to be performed on research animals. 

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Responsible for animal husbandry of all animal species. Transfers animals to appropriate cages; provide proper food and water and an enrichment program. Handles animals humanely while applying regulations of federal, state and local governments. Pushes stainless steel carts throughout the facility. Sanitizes animal and ancillary rooms.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Performs parasitology, serology, blood withdrawal and IV and urinary catheter placement. Records all findings and reports abnormalities to Manager and veterinarian. Maintains patent ports at all times to insure proper care of animals. Performs euthanasia on all laboratory species. Performs CO2, IV, IP and cardiac puncture techniques on all laboratory animal species.
  • Prepares OR for aseptic and non-aseptic Surgery. Provides OR case-specific instruments, micro-surgery and laparoscopic equipment. Sterilizes OR after every case. Lubricates, polishes and autoclaves instruments. Orders instruments when necessary. Prepares instruments packs for surgery.
  • Maintains equipment, inventory of all supplies and equipment. Orders necessary supplies for surgical cases and for daily operations of individual researchers. Trouble-shoots for problems with equipment and contacts Bio-Med for solutions.
  • Responsible for pre-operative, operative and post-operative care. Provides pre-anesthetic agents, preps species for surgical procedures, monitor anesthesia throughout surgical case and provide supportive care to patients in recovery. Assists PI as circulating and surgical nurse.
  • Maintains charts, records and drug inventory on laboratory species. Keeps detailed records of treatments and procedures while training PI on proper record-keeping techniques. Maintains cage cards, daily animal census, per-diem sheets and accurate surgery records. Maintains accurate drug inventory and logs for individual investigators and Pharmacy Department while adhering to government guidelines for drug inventory.
  • Monitors health status of animals and assists researchers with maintaining rodent breeding colonies. Informs Manager, veterinarian and PI of sick animals. Provides treatment and follow-up care. Euthanizes animals when appropriate. Advises and consults with researchers housing active breeding colonies. Makes educated recommendations to facilitate successful results.

 

Minimum Qualifications:


  • To qualify you must have a High Diploma or GED.
  • 1-2 years Prior work experience with animals.
  • Strong communication (both written and oral), and customer service skills.
  • Veterinary technician skills.
  • Basic computer skills and requisitioning software.
  • Knowledge of crash box medications.
  • Must be able to handle the emotional stress of working with laboratory animals.
  • Ability to perform emergency procedures and euthanasia.
  • Knowledge of protocol requirements and acceptable methods for each species mandatory. .

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate s Degree Veterinary Technology (AAS). 
  • Current and valid New York State Veterinary Technician License.
  • Certification at the Laboratory Technician level of AALAS.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $48,274.09 - $76,774.11 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
