About the Lab

The Lappalainen lab studies functional genetic variation in the human populations by analyzing how genetic variants affect molecular and cellular traits, and how these cellular changes contribute to genetic risk for both common and rare diseases and traits. We analyze these questions both by computational genetics analysis of large multi-omic data sets from cells and tissues, and by experimental approaches based on CRISPR perturbations and single-cell sequencing. Our lab includes experts across the field of systems genetics, from statistical genetics and genomics to molecular genomics, and we work closely with our team in Stockholm, Sweden, as well as other collaborators locally and internationally.

About the Position

We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist eager to understand the impact of human genetic variation on gene expression and phenotypes at the cellular, tissue and physiological levels. The specific project would be tailored according to the interests and expertise of the postdoc, but possible projects include developmental GTEx, regulatory variant mapping and characterization large single-cell data from T cells, analysis of transcription factors as drivers of genetic associations and regulatory networks, and integration of population genetics and CRISPR perturbation data. In addition, we envision that the postdoctoral scientist will play a major role in developing new projects in a supportive team science environment. While this position is primarily for computational work, close collaboration with experimental scientists is encouraged. There are possibilities for co-mentorship with collaborating PIs at NY Genome Center and beyond.

Requirements & Qualifications

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD or MD-PhD and have prior research experience in functional genomics, statistical genetics, and/or computational biology and will have prior peer-reviewed publications. The candidate will be expected to plan and carry out research tasks independently and present findings on a regular basis.

Salary & Benefits

The pay range for this position is $63,000-68,000 per year; the base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is also eligible for an $18,000 per year taxable housing allowance.

About the New York Genome Center

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s), and cancer.
