Muskegon Community College is a center for lifelong learning that helps people attain their educational goals by offering programs that respond to individual, community, and global needs. MCC is an associate degree-granting institution of higher education and an applied technology leader for high-tech, hands-on training.

 With nearly a 100-year history of academic excellence, MCC is a public community college accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. With robust student success support, free tutoring, 18 athletic teams, events, clubs, and activities, MCC has an annual, full-time equated student enrollment of approximately 2,300 and an unduplicated headcount of 5,100.

 Most recently, Muskegon Community College outranked all other colleges in Michigan for the rate of students who received federal financial aid and then transferred to continue their education at a four-year institution. The college’s transfer-out rate was the highest in Michigan, 7 percentage points above the state average, and outpaced the average transfer rate across the nation. MCC is nationally recognized for its liberal arts and occupational programs. 

 The College has an annual operating budget (general fund) of $44 million and employs about 210 regular full and part-time staff and many adjunct faculty and student assistants. The College also offers 56 Associate degree programs and 29 certificate programs.  

 The main campus is located on a 111-acre campus in Muskegon which includes the Hendrik Meijer Library & Information Technology Center, Bartels-Rode Gymnasium, Frauenthal Foundation Fine Arts Center (including the Overbrook Theater and Art Gallery), Stevenson Center for Higher Education, the Science Center, the Health and Wellness Center, and the Art & Music Center.  

 Muskegon Community College also operates the Sturrus Technology Center and Fab Lab in downtown Muskegon andextension centers in Ottawa and Newaygo Counties.

Muskegon County residents enjoy 26 miles of sugar-sand beaches along Lake Michigan’s shoreline, as well as one of America’s only luge tracks at the Winter Sports Complex and the regionally popular Michigan’s Adventure Amusement & Water Park. An outdoor recreation hub with three state parks and swimming, fishing and boating on its many lakes and rivers, the Muskegon area offers dynamic downtown and beachfront restaurant and entertainment venues. The Muskegon Farmer’s Market is the second largest in Michigan. Cruise ships dock in Muskegon, while a high-speed ferry connects the city to Milwaukee. Notable local museums range from rare art collections to an actual World War II submarine and a U.S. Navy ship used during D-Day.

We are seeking qualified candidates for our brand new men’s program -  Men's Head Volleyball Coach position.

 

General Description:

 Assumes responsibility for all aspects of the Program, planning short and long terms objectives, demonstrating technical expertise in the basics of the sport, and teaching the fundamentals and advanced level skills and game strategies to student-athletes, recruiting players including determining which schools to visit and which athletes to recruit, recommending the selection of team members, supervising practice sessions, scouting future opponents, providing expert advice to the team members, providing guidance or mentoring to student athletes throughout the academic year, and assisting with monitoring academic progress of participating student-athletes. Responsible for coaching, practice, conditioning, travel arrangements, and recruitment. Primary focus is on student athletes’ academic success and development.

  1. High School Diploma Required, Bachelor’s Degree Preferred.
  2. Two years minimum coaching experience.
  3. Ability to recruit talented student athletes.
  4. College level teaching and coaching skills.
  5. Demonstrated ability to relate to people of all ages, races, and social-economic backgrounds.
  6. Possess a strong knowledge & love of the sport.
  7. Knowledge of sport training and strategies.
  8. Demonstrated ability to project a positive and professional image in pressure situations.
  9. Demonstrated character & values to represent MCC by leading, motivating, and mentoring Student Athletes.
  10. Abide by the rules & regulations of the leagues in which you will be competing.
  11. Successful candidate have strong inter-personal skills with a proven record of building rapport with a variety of students.
  12. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and outside persons.
  13. Demonstrated use of tact, judgment and discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality when working with students, faculty/staff and others.
  14. Demonstrated history of dependability and punctuality.
  15. Ability to stay calm while working under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  16. Highly motivated and solution oriented with a high degree of integrity, ethics and dedication to the mission of the College.
  17. Ability to demonstrate appropriate problem-solving skills.
  18. Demonstrated excellence in both oral and written communication skills to cover a variety of audiences
  19. Flexible scheduling to allow for evening and weekend work as scheduled by your supervisor.
  20. Responsible for instruction and facilitating student learning; committed to student recruitment, retention and success; assessment of learning, development of curriculum and use of instructional delivery modes utilizing both traditional and non-traditional methodology.

Essential Functions:

    1. Teach collegiate level skills and knowledge to the student-athletes, both verbally in English & by physical demonstration or participating in drills/sport.
    2. Appropriately manage & reconcile expenses within allotted team budget.
    3. Provide leadership and mentoring to all assistant coaches.
    4. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be approved through a background check to drive college vehicles.
    5. Be loyal and supportive of all sports of the Muskegon Community College Intercollegiate Program.
    6. Provide moral support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes.
    7. Able to lift/push/pull 50 lbs. Prolonged standing/walking/sitting. Prolonged use of computer/telephone (hand/eye strain).
    8. Motivate students, and team while demonstrating problem solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of MCC.
    9. Communicate efficiently and relate well to the students, parents, faculty, staff, and others while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
    10. Maintain, support, & encourage compliance with NJCAA Sportsmanship Policy.
    11. All other duties as assigned.
