Our Claims Examiners are central to supporting the workers compensation process with their claims expertise and oversight paired with empathetic and people-centric care.  


The Claims Examiner Trainee is your first step in a meaningful claims career. We will take care of the training on claims and workers compensation, but need you to bring excellent communication, conflict management, problem solving, and a passion for customer service.  


Required Skills

What you will do:

The claims examiner trainee is exactly how it’s stated, a trainee. Through direct supervision by a claims professional, you will learn the ins and outs of the workers’ compensation system and the ability to manage noncomplex injured worker claims. In your trainee capacity you perform the following key activities: 

  • Investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and resolve injured worker’s claims by following Montana State Fund Claim Guidelines and industry Best Claim Practices.
  • Respond to injured worker and policyholder questions, explain the workers’ compensation claim process in layman’s terms and help the injured worker and policyholder to understand the claim handling process throughout the life of the claim.
  • Calculate and authorize the payment of medical and wage benefits to injured workers.
  • Handle policyholder and injured worker confidential information according to MSF policies.
  • Manage positive working relationships with injured worker attorneys, medical providers, and vendors.
  • Seek and accept claim management feedback that supports MSF Claim Guidelines and industry Best Claim Practices.
  • Learn and understand Montana’s Workers’ Compensation laws, MSF Claim Guidelines, systems, and policies and industry Best Claim Practices. 

Required Experience

What you will need (minimum qualifications): 

Required: 

  • High school diploma OR GED 

Preferred: 

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Relevant designations and/or certifications 
     

Career development: After the training period and ability to display the required competencies of this position, career growth is just around the corner. Claims examiner trainees promote to Claims Examiner I (CEI) and can continue their development to our most senior claims roles.  

Compensation and benefits:  

Compensation: The trainee period starts between $49,500-$61,800 ($23.79-$29.72/hr) and is a non-exempt position. After promotion to CEI and beyond, the compensation for the role continues to increase, up to $87,200-$116,300.

Job location: This position requires the employee to live and work in the State of Montana. Claims examiner trainees have a hybrid work environment. Occasional work in the Helena, Montana office may be required for special trainings and events.
