POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting in the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance of the Distribution Automation and Reliability Network. This position will work towards the continual improvement of the Cooperatives Distribution Automation and Reliability systems using advanced Smart Grid technologies and practices.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Assists to troubleshoot, install, and maintain all Operations Technology (OT) equipment such as Distribution Automation Security and Communications networks and applications including but not limited radios, modems, routers, switches, firewalls, gateways, and controllers.
B. Assists to troubleshoot, install, and maintain all intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), controls, sensors microprocessor relays, meters, and actuators.
C. Assists to integrate and process OT and IED Distribution Automation systems, networks, protocols, technologies, interfaces.
D. Uses diagnostic and analytical tools and testing software to ensure operability of OT devices and to diagnose malfunctions.
E. Collaborate with Operation Technicians in the continual enhancement of the Distribution Automation Network and System.
F. Coordinate testing and commissioning with Control Center operations and procedures to establish and confirm security, telemetry and automation.
G. Responsible for complex analytical, troubleshooting, maintenance, communications, operation and construction tasks associated with distribution automation the system.

I. Maintains records for IED’s, data concentrators and communications devices, point maps and all other associated ancillary systems.
J. Observes all applicable safety rules and regulations.

The Automation Network Technician shall be required to perform any other duties necessary or assigned to fulfill the objective of the Cooperative.
Required Skills
Abilities and Skills: Must be able to learn and apply information from technical manuals and drawings in the completion of duties of the position. This position requires the ability to perform testing both in the lab and with portable test equipment. Must be able to perform the activities necessary to complete work assignments described in the position description. Must be able to understand electrical characteristics of electrical devices, circuits and test equipment and apply corresponding test procedures. Must be able to understand and perform troubleshooting techniques for older and latest devices. This position requires personal computer skills utilizing programs, which operate in both Dos and Windows, based environments. Good oral and written communication skills are required to communicate technical information in a layman’s language.
Physical Effort: The position requires frequent lifting of equipment and related materials. Occasional lifting of equipment weighing approximately 100 pounds is required. Walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time may be required in the performance of the duties of this position.
Equipment Operated: Must be able to operate assigned equipment including personal computers and testing equipment. A valid Texas Driver’s License is required.
Working Conditions: Activities of the position take place in the field and in the shop. Activities may occur under a variety of weather conditions. Irregular hours including nights, weekends, and Holidays may be required. Hazardous conditions include but are not limited to, exposure to energized medium and low voltage circuits, medium and low voltage equipment, test equipment, and technically stressful conditions.
Overtime and serving on call rotation may also be required.
Required Experience
Job Knowledge, Training and Experience:
The application and practice of network engineering theory and advanced information technology is required in the performance of the duties of this position. The knowledge required for these duties is normally obtained through the completion of a 2- or 4-year degree program in network systems or computer science at a college or technical school. Prior progressively technical experience in Communications Networks, Information Technology and/or Network Technology Application is preferred. Experience with computer and networking design, theory and applications is preferred. This experience may include electrical engineering and/or network systems design, programming and application of Cyber Security, Automation, Engineering, Programming, Networking, Communications Systems, SCADA Systems, Controllers, Sensors, Firewalls and Controls and other related technical equipment. A person in this position should have a working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, the National Electrical Safety Code.
