Medical Technologist
Medical Professionals
Performs all standardized and complex laboratory procedures within area of responsibility. Provides leadership and direction of lower level technologists and other support personnel. May supervise a group of employees within a laboratory or a laboratory section. Provides leadership in the areas of education, research and development, and/or quality assurance. Participates in teaching activities for trainees.
• Processes physician or supervisor’s orders for clinical test
• Collects patient samples for testing by Nasopharyngeal swabs, buccal samples, finger sticks,
• Logs in patient information for testing in the Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS),
• Prepares specimens for testing
• Performs routine or special laboratory tests
• Utilizes laboratory equipment such as automated RNA extraction instrument (Kingfisher), qPCR machine (QauntStudio5), centrifuge, and vortex mixer.
• Utilizes LIMS to key in and report patient results.
• Enters information into computer terminal; records and files reports; compiles reports from test results; submits lab reports to physicians, analyzes clinical laboratory data.
• Performs and analyze proficiency testing, competency testing, and parallel testing surveys for clinical laboratory
• Performs successfully in annual employee competency evaluations
• Keeps laboratory clean
• Participates in teaching activities for trainees when needed.
• Orders and stores laboratory supply and reagents.
• Properly maintain the biohazard specimens according the lab procedure.
• Performs clinical tests, procedures and analyzes clinical data which requires the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal supervision
• Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Skills
• Knowledge of scientific and technical procedures used in performing laboratory test for the diagnosis and cure of disease.
• Numerical ability to accurately calculate test results.
• Ability to maintain precision and accuracy in performance of laboratory tests according to Lab Standard Operating Procedures.
• Must handle specimens of contagious disease or specimens that have bad odor.
• Ability to perform assigned duties well under possible stressful situations.
• Ability to evaluate routine situations and make routine decisions within prescribed guidelines.
• Ability to conduct routine clinical tests and research tests following universal precautions and standard protocols.
• Ability to accurately enter data electronically.
• Ability to analyze clinical results for research project.
Required Experience
• A bachelor's degree in medical technology, or a chemical, physical, or biological science.
• The bachelor's degree requirement may be waived for a medical technologist who was ASCP certified in the years prior to the bachelor's degree requirement by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and a HEW/HHS technologist certified by Health and Human Services.
• Certification desired (but not required )y one of the following agencies: MT (ASCP), or categorical MT (HEW), MT (HHS), MT (AMT), MT (NCA), CHT (ABHI).
• Licensure by the Tennessee Department of Health as a Medical Technologist is required.
• Molecular diagnostic experience desired.
