Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer

Position Summary

At the direction of the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor; this position is responsible for design and development of industrial automation, robotic and electromechanical solutions. These solutions are developed to meet the needs of MEAU’s Business Development and Sales & Marketing objectives. Industries include packaging, material handling, life sciences, semiconductor and consumer electronics. Projects are both MEAU standard product offering and customer custom solutions. 

Position Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Ability to create innovative solutions and ability to translate them into final products with SolidWorks parametric modeling software
    • End of Arm Tooling (EOAT) for robotic applications
      • Grippers
      • Vacuum
      • Welding
      • Milling
      • Sensing
    • Robotic frames/cells and required mechanical assemblies
    • Servo driven mechanisms such as linear actuators, positioning systems, etc.
    • Fixtures, jigs, alignment devices, homing systems, etc.
    • Solutions include:
  • Multitasking skills for new products development and scope of work
  • Defining time line and coordinating resources when required
  • Working within SolidWorks to develop products, BOM’s and configurations  
  • Developing industrial automation solutions to align with MEAU growth strategy and initiatives
  • Develop new product proposals for key or high-level opportunities
  • Present new development ideas to the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor
  • Support sourcing and specification of components including 3rd party purchased items, sheet metal, control, and power distribution.
  • Interface with MEAU production and supply chain departments to ensure timelines are met
  • Review and document MEAU engineering mechanical standards and practices, make recommendations for alignment with North American best practices and standards
  • Work with MEAU quality control to establish standards and alignment for electromechanical solutions

Essential Education, Skills and Experience

  • BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design using 3D CAD including:
    • Generating manufacturing drawings/assemblies with appropriate tolerances
    • Supporting work with calculations as required (i.e. stress analysis, free body diagrams, torque requirements, etc.)
    • Working closely with machine shops and assembly
  • Experience using/specifying compressed air systems (actuators, valves, fittings, etc.)
  • Ability to solve basic to complex mechanical tasks mostly independently
  • Basic knowledge of assembly techniques and best practices (welding, bolted assemblies, torque values, etc.)
  • Proficient with Solid Works Mechanical (or equivalent software) including configurations, surfaces, advanced part/assembly, and BOM’s
  • Project management skills and ability to multitask projects
  • Ability to work with a team of engineers and make technical decisions
  • Clear understanding of the system cost ramifications of design trade-offs, component selection, manufacturing techniques, design techniques, and test and qualification procedures.
  • Excellent written & verbal communications skills
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Experience putting together cost estimates based on materials, components, and estimated hours

This is a hybrid position, 3 days in the office and 2 days remote. The location is Vernon Hills, IL.
