Position Summary: Directly accountable for the development and execution of the System Protection (Protective Relaying) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) philosophy for the organization. Supervises and provides technical directions to a team of engineers and technical resources responsible for performing work activities that support the operation and performance of the electrical infrastructure, including transmission, substation and distributions facilities. Supervision includes, but is not limited to, work assignment and management, technical mentoring, technical review and approval of work products, employee training and development, and performance management. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and corporate standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures. Serves as the organizational expert for System Protection and SCADA.
Position Responsibilities
- Leads all protection and control functions for the transmission, substation and distribution electrical power systems, including the development and implementation of the protective relaying philosophy, the execution of system coordination and protection studies, the calculation of protective relay settings, the development of electrical control drawings, the post fault analysis of system performance, and the coordination of interconnection schemes with power suppliers.
- Leads the planning, design, programming and maintenance of the SCADA system. Ensures that the SCADA system clearly and accurately reflects the electric system and provides the functionality required to meet operational needs.
- Leads the development and implementation of commissioning and test procedures for all SCADA systems, protective relaying systems, and associated protection and controls schemes.
- Represents the organization’s interests in system protection, system reliability, and SCADA activities internal and external to the organization, which may include other functional departments, regulatory agencies, consultants, contractors, vendors, power suppliers and other utilities.
- Provides work direction to a team of engineers and technical resources in the areas of system protection and SCADA that are in accordance with all safety, applicable industry, and regulatory standards and requirements. May serve as the corporate representative on industry or regulatory committees regarding system performance areas of expertise.
- Selects, develops, and maintains a highly qualified and motivated staff of engineers. Provides performance evaluations, coaching, training, goal development, and conflict resolution as necessary to maintain desired productivity.
- Ensures teamwork activities in assigned area are completed on time, within budget and to quality expectations.
- Leads and supports resolutions to problematic field situations related to system operation, system protection, and SCADA.
- Partners with peers, project managers and project/program teams to enhance overall business results.
- Identifies and influences implementation of best practices to improve productivity and reduce operating costs.
- Maintains effective working relationships with employees and customers at all levels within the corporation. Ensures smooth operations, productive communications, and effective understanding during all interpersonal contacts. Provides current and accurate information to all requesters, courteously and in a timely manner.
- Support the corporate and divisional vision, strategic initiatives, and objectives.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree Engineering (prefer electrical or power) (Required)
Experience
- 10+ to 15 Years progressive experience in the electric utility environment (8 years with a Professional Engineering License). (Required) and
- 5+ to 7 Years experience in system protection and control and/or operations engineering work areas. (Required) and
- 2+ to 5 Years experience in a leadership and/or supervisory role. (Required)
- Experienced working with budgets, goals and metrics, and resource plans. (Preferred)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Professional Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. (Required)
- Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with all levels within and outside of the organization. (Required)

Licenses and Certifications
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days of becoming a Florida resident. (Required)
