A career-minded Water/Wastewater engineer, looking towards advancement, is needed to join JMT’s fast growing Water/Wastewater consultant engineering practice in Richmond, Virginia. Employee may plan and lead engineering tasks and projects in the water/wastewater field through working knowledge of applicable design criteria, regulatory requirements, standards and processes; manage multiple design projects, manage preparation and updating of project schedules; develop, analyze and document critical design elements; coordinate the efforts of a design team to determine requirements and incorporate feedback. The selected candidate will become part of an established team of engineers working on exciting sewershed study and rehabilitation, wastewater collection, water distribution, and pump station projects in the Mid-Atlantic region. Employee is expected to provide quality engineering evaluation and design services efficiently to support the project team’s objective and provide customer satisfaction on all projects.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Design responsibilities and project management
- Working closely with a design team to develop construction plans and specifications for various design projects
- Some business development activities such as proposal writing and project interviews
- Developing scopes of work, conceptual designs and preliminary engineering studies; conceiving and implementing field investigation programs, sub-contractor management, as well as coordination of design disciplines in final design projects
- Participating in and overseeing construction phase engineering services
- Coordinating with clients, contractors, outside consultants, government agencies and firm staff
- Flexibility to support time-critical report development and production to meet demanding schedules

Required Skills
- Candidates must have the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-production office environment, build successful team relationships and maintain positive coworker interactions
- Candidates must demonstrate familiarity with hydraulic calculations, sanitary collection sewer design and rehabilitation, water distribution design, engineering economics, preparation of specifications and engineering report writing
- Candidates must demonstrate organized practices, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and have flexibility to support time-critical report development and production in order to meet demanding schedules
- Candidates should have a firm grasp of general heavy construction principles; operations-related experience is considered a plus
- Applicant should demonstrate strong team-building skills, and ideally experience operating in a regional-office environment
- Candidate should be able to present technical writing products to internal team and client
- NASSCO certifications preferred: MACP, PACP and LACP
- Strong computer skills are required: Familiarity with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint is needed. Candidate must also be able to produce engineering plans in AutoCAD Civil 3D and or MicroStation. Familiarity with WaterGems, SewerCAD, Revit, ArcGIS and other software a plus.
Required Experience
- 5-10 years’ experience in a consulting engineering environment
- A bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering from an ABET accredited university
- Engineering-In-Training (EIT) or, Professional Engineering License preferred in the state of Virginia
- A working knowledge of Federal, State and local jurisdiction permitting regulations
- Computer-Aided Design (CAD) literacy (AutoCAD, MicroStation, etc.)
Working Conditions
85-95% of the work is performed within a general office environment with the remainder of the time in the field. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
