Position Purpose

The Software Engineer II works under the general direction from the CIO, to design, develop, enhance, integrate, and provide support of business systems and other applications software for Technology Support departments using Python, Microsoft SQL Server, and Symitar Power-On. The Software Engineer II will facilitate and implement the integration of new and existing IT components and technology in the most efficient and cost-effective manner; provide project management, consulting, technical support and training to Technology Support end-users; provide leadership and facilitate internal and external communications during all phases of critical projects and daily operations; review, analyze and provide technical support to assist in streamlining and automating end-user processes; and serve as a technical representative with external agencies, vendors, consultants and the public.

 

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

  • Assists team with all aspects of software design and coding.
  • Enhances applications by identifying opportunities for improvement, making recommendations and designing and implementing systems.
  • Focuses on collaboration to create software-based solutions that improve member experience.
  • Writes and maintains code and conducts development tests.
  • Monitors the technical performance of internal systems.
  • Works to fix minor bugs.
  • Assists with help desk tickets and other end-user issues.
  • Acts as a resource to Credit Union team members on IT related issues and offers solutions.
  • Gathers information from team members about program functionality.
  • Improves system quality by identifying issues and common solutions. Documents code, creates SOPs, and trains team members as needed.
  • Investigates and recommends use of new technologies where relevant.
  • Learns the codebase and improves their coding skills.
  • Attends and participates in all required meetings, trainings and committees.
  • Participates in community and civic events to promote awareness of the Credit Union in the community.
  • Completes all required compliance training and adheres to all regulations which apply within the scope of the position to include the Bank Secrecy Act.
  • Ensure that work area and equipment are clean, secure, and well-maintained.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Average Visual Abilities:       

  • Average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate machinery.

  • Exerts up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. frequently.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  •  No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions (such as in a typical office).
  •  Frequent local travel.

MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

 

Reasoning Ability:                      

  • Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.
  • Able to interpret various instructions.

 Mathematics Ability:                

  • Able to compute discount, interest, profit and loss; commission markup and selling price; and ratio, proportion, and percentage.
  • Able to perform very simple Algebra.

 

Language Ability:                       

  • Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, instruction manuals, atlases, and encyclopedias.          
  • Ability to prepare memos, reports, and essays using proper punctuation, spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to communicate distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis; correct pronunciation (or sign equivalent) and variation in word order; using present, perfect, and future tenses.

Required Experience

Education/Certification:        

  • Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science, or closely related field or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

Required Knowledge:              

  • Understanding of organization operations and needs.
  • Knowledge of software design principles and methods.
  • Knowledge of software programming languages.

 

Experience Required:               

  • Five to eight years of computer-related experience, preferably in a financial environment.
  • Knowledge of basic coding languages including Python, SQL, and C#.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server
  • Experience in a credit union environment working with Symitar preferred.
  • Experience with automation platforms and techniques preferred.
  • Experience with Jack Henry, Symitar, and PowerOn preferred.
