How will this role impact First Command?

Working as a member of First Command’s Internal Communications team and reporting to the Director, Internal Communications, the Communications Strategist will lead the planning and execution of change communication strategies that support enterprise transformation initiatives. This role will partner with senior leaders, project teams, and key stakeholders to ensure associates understand, adopt, and engage with organizational changes that advance First Command’s Mission. The strategist will develop integrated communication plans, craft compelling narratives, and leverage multiple channels to drive clarity, alignment, and confidence during periods of change.

What will the employee do in this role?

  • Develop and implement change communication strategies for enterprise initiatives (e.g., technology rollouts, organizational redesign, cultural transformation).
  • Create Internal Communications plans to support consistent and transparent communication.
  • Partner with project managers and business leaders to identify stakeholder impacts and tailor messaging accordingly.
  • Manage communication timelines and deliverables for transformation programs.
  • Measure effectiveness of change communications through feedback loops, analytics, and adoption metrics; recommend improvements.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leaders on communication best practices during change.
  • Contribute to internal storytelling that reinforces transformation goals and cultural alignment.
  • Participate in other projects and tasks as needed.
  • Serve as backup for other Internal Communications team members.

Skills & Qualifications

Education

  • College degree required.
  • Communications, journalism, or English degree preferred.

Work Experience

  • 5-7+ years’ experience in internal communications with demonstrated experience in change management or enterprise transformation. Work samples are required. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong strategic thinking and ability to translate complex change initiatives into clear, actionable communication.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with ability to craft persuasive narratives.
  • Skilled in stakeholder engagement and influencing at all levels.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, SharePoint, and willingness to learn new platforms (e.g., Viva Engage, Teams).
  • Experience in financial services or regulated industries preferred.
  • Effective in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment; able to meet multiple deadlines and prioritize simultaneous projects.
  • Internal communications experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with change frameworks (e.g., Prosci, ADKAR) is a plus.
