How will your role impact First Command?
As a Senior Project Manager, you will play a critical role in delivering high-impact initiatives that support First Command’s mission to empower military families through trusted financial guidance and solutions. You will lead complex enterprise projects from initiation through delivery, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and driving measurable business outcomes. Your ability to bridge business needs with technology execution, while navigating both Agile and Waterfall environments, will help shape First Command’s future as a high-performing, client-first organization.
What will you be doing?
Project Execution and Delivery:
- Lead the end-to-end planning, execution, and delivery of enterprise-level projects—particularly those involving technology systems, digital platforms, and infrastructure improvements. This may range from managing programs composed of related projects or complex projects with multiple workstreams.
- Define project scope, goals, and deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Apply the appropriate project management methodology (Agile, Waterfall, or Hybrid) based on the initiative’s needs and complexity.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, risks, resources, and stakeholder expectations throughout the project lifecycle
- Track and communicate project progress to leadership and governance teams using standard reporting tools and dashboards.
- Develop approach to manage organizational change which may include communications, training and stakeholder engagement plans
Technical and Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Partner with business units, IT, product teams, data teams, and vendors to deliver technical solutions that drive value and ensure compliance.
- Translate technical requirements into actionable workstreams for business stakeholders and non-technical partners.
- Support the integration of new tools and platforms into existing enterprise systems.
- Directly lead cross-functional project teams composed of internal staff, contractors, and vendors.
- Mentor junior project managers and business analysts.
- Provide leadership, fostering accountability and a culture of collaboration.
Risk Management and Governance:
- Proactively identify risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure successful project execution.
- Ensure compliance with enterprise PMO governance standards and financial controls.
- Contribute to project prioritization and resource allocation decisions in coordination with e-PMO leadership.
Continuous Improvement:
- Champion continuous improvement practices by evaluating project outcomes and applying lessons learned.
- Mentor peers and junior project team members on project management best practices and tools.
- Contribute to the advancement of e-PMO standards, templates, and methodologies.
What skills/qualifications do you need?
Education
- Bachelor’s degree is required.
Experience
- 10+ years of experience in project management, with 5+ years focused on managing complex technical and IT-related projects
- Experience leading programs and projects
- Demonstrated success leading both Agile and Waterfall projects in a fast-paced, regulated environment—preferably in financial services
- Proven experience managing enterprise system implementations, cloud migrations, digital initiatives, or data/infrastructure projects
- Proven experience facilitating Governance meetings with stakeholders at all levels of the organization, including Executive leadership
Certifications
- PMP (Project Management Professional) required.
- Agile certifications (e.g., SAFe, CSM, PMI-ACP) preferred.
- Additional certifications (e.g., Scrum@Scale, ITIL, Six Sigma) are a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Solid understanding of project and software development life cycles.
- Familiarity with enterprise architecture, application development, systems integration, and vendor management.
- Understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements in financial services is highly desirable.
