Summary – basic function of the role

 

Responsible for the comprehensive accounting functions of the Cortland Biomedical line of business including P&L oversight of manufacturing and SG&A expenses. Duties include recording, reporting, analyzing, and communicating financial activity and results to cross functional groups and Corporate. Work as a business partner with both Operations and Commercial teams to improve performance using Financial Reporting and Analysis.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

 

  1. Responsible for the accounting of a specific manufacturing plant including complete oversight of the P&L and Balance Sheet accounts.
  2. Preparation of month end closing as well as weekly and monthly expense and variance analysis and reporting packages for the Management teams.
  3. Responsible for cost accounting, partnering with Operations to validate and maintain accurate costs on products in Production and establishing costs on Development products to ensure adequate margins and commercial pricing.
  4. Review, develop and establish labor and overhead rates for costing, develop material costs and prepare and perform annual cost roll with Operations team. Partner with Operations team to evaluate labor/overhead rate structure to determine alternative model to balance resource allocation amongst products beyond strictly direct labor hours.
  5. Evaluate method of accounting for indirect R&D jobs to better align cost and revenue recognition.
  6. Analysis of production/manufacturing costs, utilization, efficiency, and inventory valuation with a focus on variance to standards, evaluation of drivers and recommending improvements or changes.
  7. Assist with annual physical inventory and assist in development and implementation of cycle count program within Corporate guidelines and policies to eliminate annual physical inventory requirements.
  8. Responsible for quarterly forecasting, annual budget preparation and monthly projections.
  9. Coordinate and support activities across departments.
  10. Manage multiple deadlines and respond quickly to management requests.
  11. Prepare and maintain detailed procedures for respective areas of responsibility.
  12. Identify and lead continuous improvement initiatives.
  13. Ensure adherence to and effectiveness of internal control in areas of responsibility.
  14. Facilitate internal and external audit needs and requests.
  15. Research and application of technical US GAAP requirements.
  16. Other duties and analysis as assigned by Finance Director or Controller.

 

 

Skills and Competencies

 

  1. Work independently under general direction, with latitude for initiative and judgment
  2. Excellent communication skills for working with finance team members, management, peers and information users (for gathering requirements/requests for information)
  3. Work and communicate with others in a dynamic, team-oriented environment
  4. Analysis and problem-solving
  5. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, in particular data analysis techniques within Microsoft Excel, Power BI experience a plus
  6. Mature project management skills

 

Education and Experience

 

Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in accounting or finance. MBA preferred.

Experience Requirements: Four to seven plus years of manufacturing industry or equivalent experience; familiarity with ERP systems (Macola experience a plus) and financial consolidation tools (preference towards Hyperion/HFM); Knowledge and experience of cost accounting principles, financial statement preparation and analysis is required.

Certification Requirements: CPA or CMA Certification preferred

 

Physical Demands

 

Employee may have to lift documents/work materials up to 30 pounds in weight. Employee will have to be able to walk/climb to a variety of primary work locations, including traveling by air/auto to remote sites. Employee will need to listen, understand, and speak with team members in person, telephonically, and electronically at all levels within a diverse workforce and with supported organizations. Employee is able to work in front of a personal computer and telephone for long periods of time.

 

Up to 10%-20% travel to support other Cortland locations as needed

 

 

Work Environment

 

Primary work environment is temperature-controlled office setting but may also be visiting different manufacturing facilities where following appropriate safety protocols at the location would be required. Employee will be exposed to low levels of noise in an office.  Remote work allowable up to 2 days per week per Corporate policy.
