Title of Position

Physical Science Assistant

Position Details:

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the National Park Service are seeking an intern who will assist with monitoring the hydrology and ecology of desert springs across the Mojave Desert Network.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Navigating to remote backcountry parking locations and field sites
  • Driving long distances on highways and on poorly maintained dirt roads
  • Hiking up to 10 miles per day to field sites, sometimes on uneven or steep terrain and/or in challenging weather
  • Camping up to 4 nights in a row, sometimes in primitive conditions
  • Collecting hydrological and ecological data at desert springs
  • Preparing backcountry travel plans
  • Maintaining field vehicles and water quality instruments
  • Disinfecting field vehicles, sampling equipment, and camping gear
  • Entering, uploading, and reviewing data in the office
  • Following safety training and promoting program safety

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., physical science, biological science, engineering)
  • Ability to hike up to 10 miles per day for multiple days on steep or uneven terrain in potentially challenging weather (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind)
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be a US Citizen or legal permanent resident.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or be a registered Sex Offender & must submit to a background screening

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience camping in primitive conditions for multiple days
  • Experience using water quality instruments
  • Experience identifying plants of the Mojave or Great Basin regions
  • Experience working in Survey123, AGOL, or other GIS software
