Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards, in partnership with Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park are seeking an intern who will preserve and protect historic landscapes and buildings to help support a better understanding of national parks, President Johnson's history and legacy, and a connection between the community and the outdoors. Lyndon B. Johnson NHP has developed a variety of community partners that will help the park tell a comprehensive story of the Central/South Texas region and the legacy of President Johnson in the area. With the help of community partners and park staff, the intern under this project will provide a visual means to inspire and empower youth and visitors of all ages by the preservation and protection of the buildings and landscapes of historical significance. This project will further contribute to the Park’s mission to ensure the historical features are preserved for the future enjoyment of new and diverse audiences.


Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Identify preservation needs, goals, and materials needed to preform historic preservation maintenance on buildings and landscapes.
  • Use historic preservation techniques to maintain historic buildings and landscapes.
  • Identify project themes, goals, and for preserving and protecting historic buildings and structures.
  • Perform simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment, and related utilities.
  • Assist higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
  • Minor carpentry, painting, and plumbing repairs according to specific instructions.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Lyndon B. Johnson NHP is looking for an enthusiastic, reliable, responsible candidates with a positive attitude.
  • Candidates must be US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.
  • Must be 18 years or older at start of internship.


 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in historic preservation or similar experience is recommended, but not required.
  • Prior experience in construction or maintenance is a plus, but not required.

  • Living Allowance: $580/week (pre-tax).
  • On the job training with staff trained in historic preservation techniques.
  • During this internship opportunity, interns will experience first-hand different NPS careers. For example, interns will have the opportunity to shadow members of various divisions in the park, such as interpretation, museum management, and administration. In addition to supervisor, the intern will have a mentor to support the interns' professional development and goals.
