Wilderness Accessibility Intern



Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIPP in partnership with the Congaree National Park are seeking an intern who will help the park take the next steps necessary to provide outdoor recreation experiences that all visitors can enjoy.


Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Actively engage the community in the following recreational activities-
    • Wilderness hiking
    • wilderness paddling
    • front country and back country camping
    • forest wellness program activities
    • virtual recreational experiences for those unable to physically explore the park designing
  • producing digital and print materials that will aid visitors with disabilities
  • working with local organizations, clubs, and community associations to co-create innovative interpretive programs, events, and experiences for Visitors with disabilities
  • recruiting, training and equipping individuals with disabilities as park volunteers and citizen scientists
  • Implementing the accessible recreation projects identified in a previous volunteer accessibility internship conducted in the summer of 2021
  • Work with park staff to further develop a robust strategic plan for wilderness accessibility




Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be age 18-30 (veterans may be up to 35)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States
  • Full Vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting
  • Ability to pass a background check: all offers of position are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and Federal and/or State criminal background



 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred candidates have a background/degree in areas related to accessibility, education and/or community development.
  • Self-motivated with excellent communication skills
  • Comfortable working in a wilderness setting
