The purpose of this position is to receive and prioritize emergency and non-emergency police, fire and after hour utility requests while providing support to both callers and responders.

 

Please note this position requires the ability to work a 12-hour rotational shift that includes both day (06:45 a.m. to 07:00 p.m.) and night (06:45 p.m. to 7 a.m.) hours, including every other weekend shift requirement and some occasional U.S. recognized holiday shift commitments.

 

**PLEASE NOTE: This schedule subject to change based on internal and external needs to ensure continuity of operations within the department**

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Dispatches police, fire, and after-hours public works personnel for service while monitoring multiple radio channels and calls.
  • Processes emergency and non-emergency calls determining the proper response and priority based upon the provided information, enters information into database accurately and quickly fulfills the requests of emergency service departments.
  • Maintains records, files, and logs; enters a variety of information into databases and/or spreadsheets; prepares related reports.
  • Operates a variety of communications systems and platforms to facilitate effective information sharing across multiple channels.
  • Demonstrates the ability to make quick, accurate decisions under pressure while maintaining professionalism and composure in high-stress situations.

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

 Knowledge:

  • Customer service principles
  • Modern office equipment
  • Applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • Possession or ability to obtain Division of Criminal Information (DCI) Certification within one hundred-twenty (120) days from date of hire. Failure to obtain within 120 days from date of hire may result in termination.
  • Possession or ability to obtain Sheriff Standards Certification within twelve (12) months from date of hire.. Failure to obtain within 12 months from hire date may result in termination.

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.

 

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

  • Positions in this class require: fine dexterity, sitting, handling, vision, hearing, twisting, talking. 
  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time.

Required Experience

High school diploma or equivalency.
