The purpose of this position is to install, maintain, test, monitor, locate, repair and maintain underground and overhead electric distribution systems and facilities by supervising and delegating tasks to electric systems.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises crews to ensure all policies and procedures are followed, a safe work environment is maintained, and all staff members are properly trained.
  • Assists crews with installation, testing, maintenance, and the locating and repairing of underground and overhead lines.
  • Communicates with customers and property owners that have concerns regarding situations with their property.
  • Maintains records of employee times, work orders, maps, and accident reports as well as material and time on projects.
  • Assists with equipment needs for crews and replaces tools and equipment as needed.
  • Trains crew members in safety, operation, equipment, and procedures to perform daily work on electrical systems.
  • Keeps paperwork and logs of daily truck reports, job briefings, work orders, and material used for jobs.
  • Performs work on energized high voltage circuits from bucket truck or climbs wooden and steel poles as required.

  • Performs other similar duties as required.  

 

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

 

Knowledge:

  • Supervisory principles;
  • Utility systems layout and construction;
  • Electric transmission and distribution systems principles and practices;
  • Machinery and power and hand tools;
  • Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations.

 

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License;
  • Valid North Carolina Commercial Class A Driver's License;
  • CPR and First Aid Certified;
  • Pole Top Rescue and Bucket Rescue.

 PLEASE NOTE: Applicants must meet the City’s criteria for an acceptable driving record.

 

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements: 

  • Position requires: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, crawling,  pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending hearing, twisting, talking.
  • Medium Work: Exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
  • Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, fire hazards, explosives, communicable diseases.

  • Reading utility plans and maps;
  • Prioritizing and assigning work;
  • Applying local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations;
  • Analyzing problems and implementing solutions;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction;
  • Analyzing plans and specifications.

Required Experience

High school diploma or equivalency with at least three (3) years of relevant and supervisory electric utility systems experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
