The purpose of this position is to assist the assigned department with projects by operating different types of equipment and maintenance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Transports, sets up, and operates equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, roll off truck, bobcat, rear loader, dump truck, hydro seeder, etc. to assist with a variety of construction projects or performing daily routes to collect waste or clean streets.
- Performs inspection or preoperational checklist on all equipment and determines and/or conducts preventative maintenance and cleaning.
- Generates and completes all assigned work orders and documents daily work activities.
- Provides information to customers as requested.
- Supervises staff by prioritizing and assigning work, ensuring staff are trained and follow policies and procedures, and maintaining a healthy and safe working environment in the absence of a Water Crew Supervisor.

Job Specifications and Qualifications:
Knowledge:
- Construction principles and practices
- Construction equipment and tools
- Equipment operation and maintenance
- Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License;
- North Carolina Grade I Wastewater Collection Certification - Preferred (Wastewater)

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
- Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, and talking.
- Heavy Work: Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 25 -50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
- Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards.

Required Experience
High school diploma or equivalency, with at least five (5) years of relevant experience operating equipment; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
