The purpose of this position is to clean, inspect, repair, and maintain sewer, storm drains and pipes using technical equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates smoke testing and jetting equipment to identify defects or blockages with the sewer system.
  • Inspects and cleans sewer or storm drain lines using video inspection equipment or pipeline cleaning equipment to identify and resolve problems.
  • Conducts pre- and post-vehicle inspections to locate issues, make repairs, and determine parts and supplies needed.
  • Assists other departments with construction projects and cleaning valve boxes, electric vaults, storm drains, and sanitary sewer lines.
  • Generates maps, work reports, work orders, and service requests.

 

Supplemental Functions:

  • Performs other similar duties as required.

 

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

 Knowledge:

  • Construction principles;
  • Heavy equipment operation and routine maintenance;
  • Equipment and tools of the trade;
  • Applicable local, state and federal laws, rules

 

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License;
  • Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License;
  • North Carolina Grade II Wastewater Collection Certification. (Wastewater)

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

  •  Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
  •  Heavy Work: Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 25 -50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
  •  Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

Required Skills

  •  Operating a computer and related software applications;
  • Operating equipment and tools;
  • Applying local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Required Experience

High school diploma or equivalency and at least six-months of advanced study, with at least three (3) years of experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
