The purpose of this position is to provide non-emergency services to the community that are essential to motorist and roadway safety, such as vehicle crash investigations involving property damage only, assistance to stranded motorists, traffic direction, and special events assistance.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Ø  Responds to vehicle crash, traffic hazards, stranded motorists, and disabled or abandoned vehicles.

Ø  Assists community members.

Ø  Completes all state, city and Police Department required forms such as DMV-349.

Ø  Provides traffic direction and control at traffic accident scenes, road closures, inoperative or damaged traffic control devices and other situations that requires manual traffic direction.

Ø  Monitors city roadways to assist disabled motorists and aid in the removal of abandoned vehicles that obstruct roadways.

Ø  Assists with special events including but not limited to parades, fun runs, demonstrations, etc.

 

Supplemental Functions:

Performs other similar duties as required.

 

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

 

Knowledge:

  • Chapter 20 North Carolina state traffic laws
  • City and other local ordinances
  • City & department policies
  • Effective use of interviewing techniques to gather accurate information from victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Keen ability to observe details at crime scenes and during interactions with individuals.
  • Application of proper investigative techniques, including evidence collection, crime scene analysis, and report writing.
  • Accurate maintenance   of records of incidents, investigations, and other departmental functions using modern technology.
  • Prioritization of tasks Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • City geography

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Ability to complete training program designed by the North Carolina Justice Academy within six (6) months from date of hire. Failure to complete within six (6) months from date of hire may result in termination.
  • Ability to complete four (4) weeks of training with a sworn law enforcement officer within six (6) months from date of hire. Failure to complete within six (6) months from date of hire may result in termination.
  • Valid NC Driver’s License

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants must meet the City’s criteria for an acceptable driving record.

 

 Working Conditions / Physical Requirements: 

  • Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot control, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking. 
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly AND/OR walking or standing to a significant degree.

Required Experience

High school diploma or equivalency, with at least one (1) year of relevant experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
