The purpose of this position is to keep children safe by enforcing the State of North Carolina rules and regulations regarding school crossing locations throughout the City of Concord.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists children with crossing the street while going to and from school
  • Stop and controls vehicular traffic at designated crossing to allow children to cross safely
  • Directs children using the crosswalk to assure that they conform to school zone regulations
  • Checks traffic signals and school zone flashing lights for proper operation and reports any malfunctions
  • Directs traffic when necessary to allow school buses to enter and exit school property
  • Reports motorist who violate traffic laws to Sergeant

 

Supplemental Functions:

  • Performs other similar duties as required

 

Job Specifications and Qualifications

 

Knowledge:

  • Crossing Guard principles and practices
  • Applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations
  • Customer service principles

 Preferred Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License

 PLEASE NOTE: Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.                                                                             

 Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

  • Positions in this class require: standing, walking, carrying, reaching, vision, hearing, twisting, talking.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly AND/OR walking or standing to a significant degree.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration.

Required Experience

Education/Experience:

The ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
