Master Police Officer

The purpose of this position is to perform a full range of police officer and emergency response functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs special investigations, interviews and interrogates suspects and witnesses, and investigates major violations and accidents.
  • Enforces laws and ordinances by writing tickets, making arrests, serving subpoenas, and answering citizen complaints.
  • Patrols assigned district, including streets, neighborhoods, and businesses and answers calls for service.
  • Prepares reports, search warrants, documents and incident files.
  • Performs field operations by conducting surveillance, organizing and directing officers and law enforcement agencies, and executing search and arrest warrants.
  • Attends preliminary trial meetings and testifies in court if necessary.
  • Perform supervisory duties in absence of Sergeant.

 Supplemental Functions:

  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
  • Intermediate Law Enforcement Certification

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

  • Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
  •  Heavy Work: Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 25 -50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
  •  Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

 Positions assigned to Criminal Investigations Division:

  • Positions in class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
  •  Medium Work: Exerting 20 - 50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
  •  Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

 Positions assigned to Vice, Narcotics, Forensics or Property Control:

  • Positions in this class are subject to more frequent drug testing due to the sensitive nature of the assignment.

Required Experience

Associates degree from an accredited college preferred. At least three (3) years of experience as a Police Officer; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
