The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance and upkeep of the City’s Housing managed facilities and grounds. This is primarily accomplished by making repairs, obtaining materials and pricing equipment to be used for maintenance.

Please Note: An offer of employment is contingent upon successful clearance of a fingerprint screening. If the incumbent fails to obtain clearance through the fingerprint screening, they will not be able to access all necessary City buildings and therefore, may be subject to termination.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs basic carpentry, building and plumbing repairs.
  • Inventories and purchases material needed for projects
  • Performs regular maintenance and servicing of shop and hand tool equipment.
  • Prepares vacant units for occupancy by performing basic repairs and maintenance.
  • Maintains reports and daily logs of work progress.
  • Reports for after hour call backs on a rotating schedule.

  • Performs other similar duties as required.

 

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

 Knowledge:

  • Carpentry principles and practices
  • Plumbing principles and practices
  • Electrical principles and practices
  • Applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations

 

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

  • Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
  • Medium Work: Exerting 20 - 50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

Required Skills

  • Problem solving;
  • Applying local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations;
  • Using applicable tools of the trade;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Required Experience

High school diploma or equivalency and at least six-months to one (1) year of advanced study, with over one (1) year of relevant experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
