The Diesel Technology Lab Assistant supports hands-on training in CSI’s Diesel Technology program by assisting instructors and students during lab sessions. This role ensures a safe, organized, and productive learning environment for students practicing diesel diagnostics, repair, and maintenance. Candidates must be able to interact with students in the classroom and lab environment in support of full-time faculty to accomplish established outcomes for courses and the program. This is a full-time position, 11-month, hours to be determined, Monday through Friday each semester.

Duties and Responsibilities

 Support instruction for the Diesel Technology program as follows:

• Prepare diesel lab stations with necessary tools, components, and safety equipment
• Assure a safe learning environment for students including proper use of PPE
• Maintain inventory of diesel parts, fluids, and shop supplies; report shortages or equipment issues
• Clean and organize lab spaces before and after sessions
• Support instructors during demonstrations and practical assessments
• Provide general assistance to the program faculty with respect to all program activities (purchasing, cleaning, student management, & lab preparation)
• Communicate effectively with departmental personnel
• Answer basic questions relating to program content
• May act as a substitute instructor in certain cases or cover lab time when instructor is unavailable
• Conduct demonstrations and participate in recruiting at career fairs and other education-related events
• Conduct tours of the lab for students and members of the community as needed
• Be organized in scheduling and completing a list of tasks as assigned
• Maintain lab equipment and training vehicles in safe, working condition
• Perform additional related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

Must possess:

• Basic knowledge of diesel engines, heavy-duty systems, and shop safety practices
• Ability to follow safety procedures and enforce PPE standards
• Good written and oral communication skills
• Industry experience in a related occupation preferred
• Competent with email, Microsoft Office, and pdf files
• Ability to work with other assistants and instructors on campus
• Ability to safely operate forklifts, hoists, and diesel lab equipment

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

• Prior experience in a diesel shop or lab environment desirable
• Associate of Applied Science degree in a related field or equivalent work experience in the field, (4,000 hrs.) to be determined.
• Strong organizational skills
• Self-motivated
• Familiarity with diesel equipment maintenance and diagnostic tools
• CPR/First Aid certification
• Experience in educational or training settings

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

• Classroom and lab facilities in the Diesel Technology program. Lifting may be required up to 50 lbs.
