Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Department Manager is responsible for managing and coordinating the activities of the assigned department. The role oversees the provision of manpower and technical resources. While the position is predominantly management-oriented (supervising all work and personnel for the assigned Department), the position will regularly interface with clients and may occasionally perform project management tasks.  Ensuring departmental alignment with organizational goals is a key performance indicator for this position. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Responsible for Profit and Loss for the Department
  • Coordinate and direct project managers to determine scope, complexity, planning, and scheduling requirements of projects
  • Prospective Client engagement, acquisition and management. Assign department personnel to provide engineering and technical support in the specific area
  • Determine personnel needed with most appropriate individual qualifications and prepares manpower and cost estimates of department as required
  • Ensure the quality, accuracy, and completeness of departmental work; compliance with established standards, procedures, codes and ordinances; adherence to design and project schedules; and provides adequate training, technical and administrative guidance, and instruction to personnel with the department
  • Manage various personnel functions, including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisal, salary position recommendations, and employee development
  • Plan and schedule work for the department ensuring the proper and effective distribution of assignments and manpower, space, and facilities for subsequent performance of duties
  • Analyze fiscal requirements of the department, including staffing, equipment and related needs; prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds
  • Develop and on approval implement departmental policies and technical standards and procedures; assist in the development and coordination of divisional and inter­ departmental policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Prepare regular and special reports and analyzes, setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Keep abreast of current changes and developments in codes and ordinances which affect departmental activities and informs department staff of same.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein

Required Experience

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline
  • 12 years of civil/environmental engineering or management experience; A/E/C industry experience preferred
  • Demonstrated Project Management experience to include estimating, cost control, client management, and technical expertise
  • Proven profit and loss experience
  • Demonstrated client development and management experience

 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree in engineering, business, or related discipline preferred

LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Geologist (PG) License required

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required
  • This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary

 WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This job operates in a professional office environment
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines
