GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Special Care Unit (SCU) Aide directly serves elderly participants with cognitive and physical impairments in the SCU Program. SCU Aide workers will perform diverse activities throughout the course of a workday. The activity program is an integral component of the center’s operation and is designed to support participant’s care plan, facilitate independence, communication and self-esteem. Their responsibilities include personal care, assisting with ADL’s and cognitive intervention skills and general support of the program structure. The SCU Aide may also serve as backup for the SCU Activity Coordinator if designated as such. Services may include but are not limited to:
Bathing Toileting
Dressing/Grooming Feeding
Changing Linen Laundry
Walking/Transferring Cleaning
Arts/Crafts Social Activities
Passing Trays Exercise
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. As a team member of the interdisciplinary team, the SCU Aide needs to report to the SCU Activity Coordinator any pertinent information regarding the participant’s status or needs.
2. Performs basic and skilled personal care tasks as per the participant’s care plan.
3. Coordinates and leads daily activities
4. Motivates participants to maximum involvement with program activities and to increase independence according to individual’s abilities.
5. Maintains daily documentation of participant’s participation, intake, behavior, equipment, etc.
6. Utilizes behavior modification interventions to prevent agitation, combative, and aggressive (verbal, physical) behaviors, redirects participants’ if needed.
7. Provides a one-to-one participant assistance.
8. Assists with the passing of lunch trays and assistance with feeding.
9. Assists with the loading and unloading of participants during their arrival and departure.
10. Monitor participants oxygen cylinder and change as needed.
11. Completes daily documentation on participants in Electronic Medical Record.
12. Reports and monitors equipment upkeep.
13. Requires ability to rotate between sites (McKinley, Carolina & Concourse) as needed due to fluctuations in census.
14. Other duties as directed by Floor Manager or Management.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
1. Must have High School Diploma or equivalency.
2. Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant in the State of Texas.
3. One year of experience working with the frail or elderly population.
4. CPR and Food Handlers Card.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
1. Must have excellent communication skills, be flexible, and able to adapt to changes.
2. Able to assist with group activities.
3. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
4. Strong computer skills.
5. A dependable individual with an interest, understanding and appreciation for the elderly.
