Boston University is an Association of American Universities institution with a rich tradition of inclusion and social justice. The School of Public Health takes the University’s commitment even further with its own detailed plan for fostering a diverse and inclusive community. Founded in 1976, BUSPH ranks as the sixth leading public health school in the country, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report graduate school rankings. We offer master's- and doctoral-level education in public health along with post-doctoral training. With over 300 faculty in six departments, the School conducts policy-changing public health research, with the mission of improving the health of populations, especially the underserved, locally and globally.

The Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is comprised of 26 primary faculty who are internationally recognized for their innovation in research, scholarship, and teaching to enhance the health and well-being of communities and promote health equity. Departmental faculty apply both social and behavioral sciences to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities; apply scientific theories and evidence from the field to develop interventions and policies tailored to diverse communities; teach courses that emphasize assessment, intervention, communication, advocacy, and community-based research and practice; broaden student understanding of the factors that shape community health and how to improve it; explore how disparities impact health in sexual and other minorities; and promote social change.

The CHS department is looking for a qualified external instructor to teach MC800 Preventing Mental Health Concerns: A Life Course Perspective. This two-credit course will use a prevention framework to examine mental health interventions targeted to women, children, and youth. We will explore how events that occur during critical developmental periods - early childhood, adolescence, and pregnancy - can alter the life course of the individual and the family. Readings will focus on preventive interventions that target specific mental health concerns, as well as those focused on addressing risk and protective factors common to many mental health issues. We will pay particular attention to how preventive interventions can be implemented and disseminated at a community level and integrated into primary care health care settings and major public health programs. The course will involve substantial group work; the majority will be done during formal class sessions.

This course will meet on Monday evenings (6pm-8:50pm) from mid-March through mid-May on the Boston University Medical Campus.
