Boston University is an Association of American Universities institution with a rich tradition of inclusion and social justice. The School of Public Health takes the University’s commitment even further with its own detailed plan for fostering a diverse and inclusive community. Founded in 1976, BUSPH ranks as the sixth leading public health school in the country, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report graduate school rankings. We offer master's- and doctoral-level education in public health along with post-doctoral training. With over 300 faculty in six departments, the School conducts policy-changing public health research, with the mission of improving the health of populations, especially the underserved, locally and globally.
The Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is comprised of 26 primary faculty who are internationally recognized for their innovation in research, scholarship, and teaching to enhance the health and well-being of communities and promote health equity. Departmental faculty apply both social and behavioral sciences to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities; apply scientific theories and evidence from the field to develop interventions and policies tailored to diverse communities; teach courses that emphasize assessment, intervention, communication, advocacy, and community-based research and practice; broaden student understanding of the factors that shape community health and how to improve it; explore how disparities impact health in sexual and other minorities; and promote social change.
The CHS department is looking for a qualified external instructor to teach MC785 Reproductive Health Advocacy: From Rights to Justice. This two-credit course prepares students to critically re-evaluate, strengthen, and argue their positions on matters related to the control of sex and reproduction. It allows students to focus on an array of issues related to fertility and its regulation among those who can become pregnant, and to use multiple frameworks--public health science, law, racism and oppression in the social history of fertility control, religion and politics--to identify their values and frame and argue their positions for purposes of advocacy. The course begins with an overview of the social and political history of fertility control and current reproductive health services and policies, and proceeds to hands-on conversations with a panel of advocates from diverse organizations, and a state house visit. We then examine debates at the state and national levels in preparation for advocacy skill-building and practice, such as developing fact sheets, designing advocacy strategies, and creating products for advocacy organization.
This course will meet on Wednesday afternoons (2pm-4:50pm) from mid-March through mid-May on the Boston University Medical Campus.
