Library Safety and Security Specialist


Boston University Libraries seeks an experienced, collaborative, and service-oriented Library Safety and Security Specialist to advance safety, security, and emergency preparedness across a complex, multi-location library system. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Finance and Operations, this professional staff position will assess security practices, develop and implement policies, coordinate training, respond to and document incidents, monitor compliance, and maintain strong partnerships with the Boston University Police Department and other campus safety offices.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate safety and security practices across BU Libraries locations and recommend improvements to policies, procedures, infrastructure, and emergency response.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain clear security and emergency preparedness policies aligned with University standards and applicable requirements.
  • Create and deliver safety training and emergency preparedness exercises for employees working a range of schedules.
  • Serve as the principal Libraries liaison to BUPD and other campus safety partners.
  • Respond to, investigate, document, and analyze safety and security incidents and recommend preventive measures.
  • Conduct facility inspections, monitor compliance, and work collaboratively with library managers and staff to resolve concerns.
  • Support safety-related planning, reporting, procurement, vendor coordination, and special projects.

 

 


Required Skills

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree.
  • At least three to five years of professional experience in security, law enforcement, or public safety.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate incidents, exercise sound judgment, and maintain clear, accurate, and confidential records.
  • Proficiency with standard computer applications and the ability to learn role-specific systems.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, security management, emergency management, or a related field.
  • Experience in higher education, campus security, or another institutional environment.
  • Experience managing safety or security programs across multiple locations.
  • Experience developing and delivering training programs.
  • Emergency management, Incident Command System, threat assessment, crisis intervention, or related professional training or certification.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.

 

Schedule:

  • This is a full-time, permanent, non-union professional staff position.
  • The standard schedule is 40 hours per week, generally Monday through Friday, with occasional evening or weekend work for training and preparedness activities. 
  • The role may require after-hours response to critical incidents or emergencies in accordance with University policy.
