Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We are currently seeking a Pro Bono Immigration Specialist, supporting the Pro Bono practice and reporting to the Paralegal Manager.
The role will reside in the Dallas office with hybrid work capabilities and will be responsible for the overall support of business processes within the Pro Bono practice related primarily to immigration matters. The Pro Bono Immigration Specialist is expected to serve as a resource for the Pro Bono practice and legal personnel to perform all responsibilities with a commitment to providing superior service to the firm’s attorneys. Above all, the Pro Bono Immigration Specialist must fulfill the needs of the firm in a manner which is consistent with the Firm’s Core Values.
Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Provide administrative support to the firm’s pro bono practice, primarily for immigration matters.
- Assist attorneys with preparing, filing, and tracking various immigration forms, applications, and petitions.
- Maintain and organize physical and electronic files related to practice cases and client records.
- Serve as a point of contact for client inquiries regarding documents and filings.
- Ensure all government filings are compiled and submitted on time.
- Help manage ongoing projects by tracking government notices, preparing updates, and coordinating with team members as needed.
- Review forms and documents for accuracy before submission.
- Assist partners and non-partner attorneys with additional projects and presentation materials as necessary.
Participate in client meetings, taking notes and assisting with administrative tasks. - Stay up to date with changes in immigration laws and regulations.
- Provide other administrative support to the Pro Bono practice as necessary.
Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a large law firm environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read, comprehend and follow instructions
- Excellent oral communication skills
- Strong service orientation
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently, take initiative, set priorities, and see projects through completion
- Ability to meet deadlines and respond to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to handle many tasks simultaneously and with diplomacy
- Ability to work with a wide range of people; quickly establishing effective working relationships within the firm, with firm clients, and with firm vendors
- Excellent judgment and common sense
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word and knowledge of conference room reservation systems
- Proficiency of equipment used on a regular basis including computers, copy machines, printers and telephones
- Ability to perform clerical skills with a high degree of accuracy
- Excellent record-keeping skills
